THURSDAY EVENING, MAY 2, T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N PAGE 25 Italian President Confers On Post-Election Crisis ROME-- UP! -- Pi-csidenti Antonio SeRni consulted today with political leaders on an expected government crisis in the wake of alarming Communist gains in t h i s week's parliamentary elections. Premier Amintore Fanfanl, whose. 'Christian Democrats were the main sufferers in the Sunday-Monday general elections, called on the silver haired president last night. Today it was the turn of outgoing Senate President Cesare Mer/agora and outgoing Chamber Speaker Giovanni Leone to meet j o i n t l y with the chief of state. The premier, whose "cen- ter-lef'." policy touched off an avalanche of Communist and Liberal protest votes, was expected to o f f e r his resignation to Segni the moment the new parliament meets May 16. This is normally a protoco ficsturo, but t h i s time it wa likely to be the real thing Even if the Christian Democrats chose to continue on the center-left path, they woulc still in all probability make Fanfani the scapegoat for the election defeat. Political observers considered Fanfani doomed as pre- nicr in view of the election results. Mentioned most frequently is likely candidates to succeed Fanfani were Interior Minister Paolo Emilio Tavi- ani, 51, and Minister of Industries Emilio Colombo, 43. Like Fnnfani, the two men are Christian Democrats, But both are considered somewhat to the right of the premier. Italy's Communist party, the largest in Western Europe, picked up a million votes in the elections. The Liberal party, whose candidates campaigned almost exclusively on the basis of their opposition to Fanfani's flirtation with the Socialists of Pietro Nenni, also gained about a million votes. The Christian Democrats remained the largest single party in the country. But both the Communist and Liberal advances appeared made at their expense, leaving them without a majority. F a n f a n i must offer to resign when the new parliament Daytoiia Beach Group Hopes Students 'Get Lost' DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--M--One group of motel owners in Daytona Beach hopes the college crowd will find another place to spend Easter vacation. A petition from the AIA Motel Association, signed by 100 motel owners, was presented to the city commission convenes May 16. But even if the Christian Democrats choose to continue his center- left policy, they are likely to ake him a scapegoat for the election results. As a consequence, political observers foresaw the possibility of years of political instability for this Common Market and NATO Alliance country. Fanfani embarked upon his "opening to the left" about 14 months ago by winning parliamentary support from Nenni's Socialists. He did this by promising to nationalize electricity and set up regional governments. Apparently this arrangement disaffected both moderate Christian Democrats and radical Socialists. It was believed that in the election, many rightist Christian Democrats voted Liberal and that more leftist Socialists deserted Nenni to vote Communist. In 1948, Nenni's Socialists had formed a common political front with the Communist party." Observers believed one of the likeliest chances for the Christian Democrats to cling to power lay in a return to the old moderate formula of a coalition with the Liberals and Giuseppe Saragat's Social Democrats. Another way out was for a caretaker government to take over and simply wait for something to happen. 100-ft. Roll Cut-Rife Plastic Wrap,. It asks that the city stop spending any money for promoting visits of or entertaining college students. Commissioner Stanley Nass estimated the city had 65,000 college student visitors during the recent Easter and spring vacation period. In that time there was not a single serious incident, he said. The president of the AIA Motel Association, Herman Weiseer, said, however, that the Easter influx of college students is destroying the family vacation resort concept which he said has been built up over the years. The commission agreed to hold a public hearing later on the petition, which also proposes a ban on consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach--a move aimed at student beer parties. One businessman, Mack Roth, said the motel petition couldn't speak for all the motel and other businesses which benefit from the visiting students. Advertisement . ATHLETE'S FOOT GERM HOW TO KILL IT.
