WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 13,1993 THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS 3-B No charges to be filed against 'grad' student FISHING REPORT Associated Press LIBERTY — School district officials say they will not press criminal charges against a 19-year-old who faked records so he could play football at Liberty High School. Rick Fletcher, a graduate of North Shore High School in Houston, and his stepfather met with law enforcement officials on Monday. But school officials decided to sidestep any possible criminal action, said Liberty superintendent Joe D. Crane. "After I spoke to several of our board members, it was evident they wanted to drop this issue and get on to other things," Crane said. "They felt like enough time and energy had been spent on this situation." School officials say Fletcher's birth certificate was falsified when he tried to pass himself off as a transfer student from Chicago. Fletcher told officials he was hoping to get attention as a gridiron standout to get a college scholarship. 1 think he believed Liberty was small enough a school and far enough away from Houston that he could pull off this ruse," Crane had said. A University Interscholastic League committee decided Friday that Liberty, a Class 3A school, must forfeit its third week 20-17 non-district victory against Little Cvpress-Mauriceville. Ken Miller, chairman of the UI committee, said the panel impose, the minimum penalty because o Liberty's quick admission to th infraction. Crane said coach John Hacker and his staff were unaware of Fletcher's true background and were disappointed about the deception. Hacker refused to comment to The Associated Press Monday night. When Fletcher enrolled himself at Liberty High School during the second week of school, he said he was a transfer student from Southside High School in Chicago and now lived with a stepbrother in nearby Dayton, Texas. Liberty is about 56 miles northeast of Houston. School officials tried to get Fletcher's academic records from Chicago, Crane said. But a Southside teachers' strike prevented them access at the time. Meanwhile, Fletcher, a member of the junior varsity football team, told Liberty officials his mother and stepfather were moving to Liberty. Fletcher was moved to the varsity level for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville game. While living in Dayton, which is not in the Liberty Independent School District, Fletcher could only play junior varsity football. The week after the game, Fletcher was moved back to junior varsity when he said his parents changed their minds and were not moving to Liberty. The family of one of Fletcher's friends had taken him in for the past few weeks and found out through a telephone call with Fletcher's mother that the teenager had already graduated from high school. Fletcher's parents believed that their son was attending school on a football scholarship at Southwestern Louisiana, 1 Mechanic's Special!
