(AP) - Finishing a late breakfast of ham and eggs, Kris Kristofferson sat b a c k in a roomy, farmhouse kitchen and lit a cigarette. , . :. Beside him sat his wife and singing partner Rita Cooledge. On her lap their 5-month-old d a u g h t e r , Casey, was being fed. " Y o u know, everyone says I ' m more relaxed now," Kristofferson said, "And maybe I am. "1 kind of think it's the way you expect me to be like now that I have an old l a d y and a baby. Everyone says how laid back I am. "I just really have a lucky l i f e right now. I guess that 38 is time to get a little serious. You have to ged rid of your t e e n a g e anxieties sometime. "But relaxed? Man, you should have seen me last night." LAST NIGHT, Kristofferson, Rita and their band had been working on the final touches of a new album. For a week they had been recording atthe studio-farm outside Nashville. They hadn't had time for social visits with some of their best friends. Before coming to Tennessee, t h e y finished a summer s h o w t o u r in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. B e f o r e t h a t , Kristofferson had acted in Sam Peckinpaw's f i l m '"Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Qarcia." v Kristofferson w a l k e d out of the kitchen, across the lawn to a log cabin which houses the recording studio. He opened a beer and lit another cigarette. · · ' · ·'-.' "That tour was fun, but d e m a n d i n g as h e l l . I imagine there will be a time when I ' m not per- forming, but I hope there is never a time when I will not be writing. "I don't think I would ever be satisfied if I wasn't writing music. Me and music are sort of mutually rewarding. "I'M W R I T I N G as much now as I ever did. It kind of goes in cycles, and I don't know if the songs are as good, better or what. "You know I still get scared performing. I t ' s not maybe as bad as at first. I don't know if it would be the same if I didn't get scared. It's like getting s i c k before football games. When I stopped getting sick before g a m e s , i t w a s n ' t t h e same.Something was lost. laughed: " M a n R i t a ' s voice is so good I'm almost afraid to go on stage with her. - . - . . , "I'd known her for several months before I, even knew how well she could sing. Man, she just gets better and better." "Johnny C a s h is the sime way. I've seen John so scared before a .show he w a s just like this," Kristofferson said, shaking his hand nervously, ' Kristofferson played back tapes ok the previous night's work.
