Stagg's death came 10 days after a pro-IRA speaker told a Roman Catholic rally in Londonderry that earlier IRA bomb campaigns in England "would be a picnic compared to the holocaust to come" if Stagg died. Members of Provisional Sinn Fein, the IRA's legal political front, said in Belfast after Stagg's death that IRA bomb squads already were poised in England for a new campaign if it was ordered. Scotland Yard declined to comment on measures in force in Britain, but news reports said police forces throughout the country were alerted to put their contingency plans into readiness.
