FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1968 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N PAGE 13 The Reluctant Taxpayer By WilHam L, Raby, CPA Here are examples of items that you might overlook when you prepare your J.%7 income tax return. A woman who made visits almost every week to her doctor's office, located 10 miles from her home, had deducted nothing for the cost of using her car on the trips for medical treatment. Each 20-mile round trip, at 5 cents per mile, oame to $1 of tax deduction. She had made 45 ( such trips during the year. The I deduction of $45 meant that $9 could be clipped off her tax bill. A man who headed up a charity fund drive also overlooked his expenses for running up 3,000 miles of auto travel while pushing the campaign to a successful conclusion. This entitled hirn to $150 additional deductions as a charitable contribution and, in his 60 per cent tax? bracket, this was worth $90 of tax reduction. A divorcee had never taken her daughter as a dependent, although her ex-husband was paying less than half of the child's support. She didn't know that a new tax law had the effect of .-shifting over to her the entitlement to that dependency exemption. The e x t r a §600 exemption increased by $120 the amount of refund she had coming. .. An executive never even bothered to list his medical expenses, since he had long ago learned that with his $30,000 a year of gross income, and with his extensive medical insurance coverage, he never had more than 3 per cent of his gross income ($900) in medical expenses. But a change effective for 1967 allows him to deduct $150 of his medical insurance premiums regardless of the fact that his medical expenses didn't exceed 3 per cent of his adjusted gross income. The $150 extra deduction saved him $45 in income taxes. A 30-year-old mother of three was treated in a psychiatric hospital for four months. Two of the children went into a day nursery. Household help was hired. The husband's income was around $15,000, and he was able to take deductions for the hospital and doctor expenses, but he didn't think he .could take deductions for the child care expenses, since his income exceeded $6,000. He was mistaken. Because his wife had been institutionalized for "over 90 days, this $6,000 limit did not apply and he was able to take an additional $900 of deduction for the child care costs. The The $198 in income taxes that he saved made the load a little lighter. Cook County Jail Warden Discharged CHICAGO (AP) - Jack Johnson, warden of Cook County (Chicago) Jail for 12 years, has been fired in the wake of a grand jury probe which termed jail conditions "deplorable" and criticized his administration. Johnson, 50, was asked by Sheriff Joseph I. Woods to submit his resignation, effective March 14. He said he would comply. Woods said Undersheriff C. Bernard Carey would serve as acting warden until a professional penologist was found for the job. A grand jury investigated the jail for three months, indicted 20 persons and issued a report saying Johnson: -- Allowed vicious inmates, including condemned murderers, to supervise other inmates. -- Lacked respect for his guards and failed to support them often enough in disputes with inmates. -- Failed to institute a standard disciplinary system in which inmates were warned of possible punishment for rule violations. -- Failed to punish rule violators, catered to inmate demands and failed to delegate authority to his supervisory staff. The grand jury said that "many of the serious problems we have found in the county jail are due to the malad- ministration of Warden John- SAFEWAY Oral. SCOPE ANTISEPTIC $J19 24-02. gls.
