Huachuca during World War II died at the base hospital yesterday. He had lived in his ranch home at Miller Canyon, near the fort, since his retirement in 1946. Col. Hardy's military career spanned 34 years and took him to many of the outposts of the world. However, he had often told associates his proudest accomplishment was the training of Negro troops for combat in World War II. UNDER HIS COMMAND, from 1942 to 1945, Ft. Huachuca trained two large units of Negro troops. One was sent to the European theater and the other to the Pacific. This marked the first time the U.S. Army had attempted to use large bodies of Negro troops. Col. Hardy was proud that he was able to coordinate the efforts of Negro and white soldiers without racial incidents. He was proud of the war record of these troops and also felt his efforts helped lay the foundations for the integrated policies now used in the service. Born in Bells, Tenn. in 1887, he xvas graduated from the Military Academy at West Point with the class of 1911. He served with the 8th Cavalry in the Philippines until 1914 when he was transferred to c: Ivary duty on the Mexican border. He served under Gen. John Pershing in protecting U.S. property and interests during the Pancho Villa upr-sings. In World War I ho trained calvary, Infantry and field artillery replacements. DURING A SECOND tour of dutv in the Philippines in the late 1920's, Col. Hardy was responsible for planning a theoretical defense of Bataan. Gen. Douglas MacAr- thiir later adopted this plan and used it in placing his defenses. From 1919 to 1922 Col. Hardy served as military at- tache in Ecuador and Colombia. His widow, Mrs. Charlotte Howard Reeder Hardy, was with the colonel at the time of his death. He is survived also by two children. Mrs. Mary Howard Wagner and Edison N. Hardy Jr. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the main chapel at Ft. Huachuca. He will be buried with full m i l i t a r y honors. Some 30 firemen worked more than an hour to control the two-alarm blaze in Gene's Cabinets, Inc. Vizcarra's charred body was found by firemen in the burning portion of the building. He was one of four men in the second-story paint room when the explosion occurred about 6 p.m. . "It just blew up," Dominic Cbickeral said. He said he, Vizcarra, Eddie Verdugo, and co-owner Clayton D u r k c e Were in the room spray-painting metal panels. "The whole nom was on fire," said Chickeral, who was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital for minor burns. "I just barely got out." Chickeral said pressure created by the blaze made it difficult for him to open the door to escape from the b u r n i n g room. Durkee and Verdugo also were treated for minor burns.
