Project Set In Atlanta ATLANTA--U--A $3 million Negro-sponsored rental housing project, scheduled for completion in 1964, will get under way here this month. The project, described as the first of Its kind in the nation, will provide 280 two- bedroom apartments in 23 garden-type apartment buildings. The cluster of three-story buildings will occupy an 11.37 - acre tract near the downtown area. Purchase of the site from the Atlanta Housing Authority for $234,000 is expected to be closed soon by Church Homes, Inc., a Negro nonprofit corporation established three years ago by the Wheat Street Baptist Church to develop and operate the project. Of the 280 apartments, 156 will rent for $70.50 a month and 124 will rent for $75.50 a month. A Federal Housing Administration official said the apartments will be for rent to "families largely overlooked by the private and public housing markets." The project will be built by an Atlanta Negro contracting firm, Jett, Banks and Russell. The Rev. William H. Borders, pastor of the Wheat Street Baptist Church, is chnirman of the board of Church Homes, Inc. He said the corporation expects to start construction of an additional 240 apartments of the same type on an adjacent site within a year. This would provide a total of 520 new downtown area apartments for Negroes in a period of less than three years, he said. SINCE 1872-! GET READY FOR SUMMER NOW! sleeps 4 adults! $ 2O OFF!
