PAGE 8 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1968 The Ugh-lier The Better Lisa Baker, Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Year, was delighted at being met at the Tucson airport last night by some of the worst looking males on the University of Arizona campus. "Just beastly" said she, admiringly. The men are competing in the annual Ugly Man charity contest sponsored by Phrateres, town women's sorority. Viling away their time with Miss Baker are (from left) Mark Morgan, Vance Luke alias Frank N. Stein, Bob Heckinan and Frank Cole. The ugly man contest ends tonight. Money raised will go to youth charities. (Citizen Photo by Bruce Hopkins) SATIRE OUT OF DATE The Gondoliers' Just Does Not Come Off By DAN PAyiLLARD Citizen Music Writer It is sad duty indeed to pan a show as one must in the case of "The Gondoliers" as presented by the Tucson Gilbert and Sullivan Theater last night at the Tucson Music Center. While it is most unfortunate that the valiant troupe has had no home this season, rehearsing like gypsies at pillar and post, it is doubtful a home alone would revive this company. For one thing, the satirical bite of Gilbert and Sullivan nearly 100 years after its heyday has lost many of its teeth. This may be incurable, possibly fatal. Gilbert and Sullivan theater, like melodrama which last night's production fitfully resembled, is one of those deceptively "easy" forms that require the greatest skill to pull off. When one hapless performer forgot his lines and the whole show stopped an agonizing few moments, the veil of unreality the audience had been asked to accept was rudely stripped away. The slip was only too human -- and one might say not the performer's fault -- underscoring the failure of the actors and singers to create the illusion of personalities other than their own. When toward the end of the show an old crone is ushered on stage to clear up the mistaken identities around which the plot wheels, her appearance alone, old and unlovely, contrasted with the daubed youthfulness of the chorus -- us, by extension -- created an apparition as grim as death: It was an effective dramatic moment but one the show could not overcome. This show might be recommended as a morality play or as hilarious camp. Not honestly, however. It is not meant as a condemnation of this production's director but the importing of a profess'ional director may be the only way an amateur company can improve. And new blood in key roles is a must. Performances are slated at 8:30 p.m. tonight, and tomorrow night, with matinees at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
