Police in this racially troubled papermill community on the Mississippi border ordered an all-out search for the sniper. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was being filled in on details. The sniper fired three shots and at least one struck Capt. Donald Sims, of Sun, La., which is in nearby St. Tammany Parish (county). Sims was making a call from a public phone booth outside an all-night service station on Columbia Road, me main street of Bogalusa and scene of civil rights marches last year. Ross Thomas, a service station attendant, said he was working on the outside area when the shooting occurred. "I didn't even hear the shots," he told investigators. The ^year-old captain was home on leave, police said, prior to his transfer to Viet Nam. He had entered the station about 45 minutes earlier to use the telephone. Police said the shots were fired at close range, The plate glass deflected them. One slug lodged to the floor near where. Sims was crawling for cover.
