Thurber Road, was set for March 25 by Federal Judge James A. Walsh. '~ One witness, as a result of the trial, now faces a perjury charge. 'The charge wr.s lodged against John C. Besse, 42, of ail Calle Garcia, yesterday by tXs. Commissioner Raymond "Eerlizzi. . |: Besse currently is serving a six-month prison term for transporting aliens from Tucson to Ri 1H to on Aug. 4. The new complaint contends Besse testified during his own preliminary hearing last August that he did not know there were 10 aliens in a camper truck he was driving. During the Knight trial yesterday he testified he knew he had aliens in the camper. Hottest Socks Afloat ABERDEEN, Scotland (AP) -- Four men were adrift in a rowboat in the North Sea. One of them soaked his socks in gasoline and set fire to them. The crew of the Aberdeen lifeboat spotted the blaze and rescued the men. THOUGHT PROVOKING Sydney Harris in the CITIZEN The president of the 100-inem- ber Tucson Academy of Pharmacists today charged Tucson Medical Center with unfair competition in the retail sale of prescription-type drugs. Charles M. Windham, who also is area manager of 10 Ryan-Evans drugstores in Tucson, said TMC is -- "or should be" --a nonprofit organization which gets its ethical pharmaceuticals at hospital prices and should not compete with community pharmacists. Windham's charge was precipitated by a statement made earlier by Dr. James E. Brady Jr., president of the Pirna County Medical Society, who said it was "deplorable" that a city the size of Tucson does not have a centrally located drugstore open all night. Ryan-Evans began phasing out its all-night operation at the Congress St. and 5th Ave. store on Jan. 4 and Monday began closing at 11 p.m. There is no all-night drugstore in Tucson and the only place where prescriptions can be filled here after 11 p.m. is at TMC's pharmacy. Windham -said his company's decision to close the Congress Street outlet was made after three years of study and an accumulated loss of more than $36,000 during the period. "The situation in Tucson is not unusual," Windham said. "There are no all-night drugstores anywhere in Arizona; in fact, there are very few anywhere that are open around-the- clock. "It's simply a matter of economics. We can't afford to pay a registered pharmacist $5 an hour just to fill a handful of prescriptions at night and in the early morning hours." He said TMC started filling · JOHN m m narrows NURSERY and FLOWER SHOP Tucson's largest and most experienced nursery, featuring everything needed for successful gardening. * ALL TYPES FERTILIZERS GARDEN SPRAYS » SUNSET GARDENING BOOKS · STEPPING STONES POTTERY RED WOOD TUBS* GARDENING TOOLS TUCSON GROWN BEDDING PLANTS 5620 EAST PIMA ONE BLOCK EAST OF CRAYCROFT · PHONE 298-3303 FREE DELIVERY Open Weekdays 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM Sundays Only 10:30 to 5:00 PM Only LEE Optical gives you a spare pair of lenses FREE! Windham recommended that area pharmacists and physicians get together and consider he possibility of setting up a ·otating service between se- elected drugstores. "Doctors would be informed of the schedule and send their patients to whatever store was open that day," he said. "Most cities have such a sys- em," he added. Donald G. Shropshire, TMC administrator, said when Ryan- vans began to phase out the closing time of its Congress Street drugstore, TMC offered ;o fill prescriptions after hours "on a public service emergency basis." "We did it reluctantly, however, because it meant adding more personnel to our staff to man this service, which has existed at TMC since 19C2 -- but only as a facility for in-hospital use," he said. Shropshire said it is the re- sponsbility of practicing retail pharmacists -- not TMC -- to meet the prescription needs of the community. "I would welcome and encourage any efforts made by local pharmacists to get together with the medical profession and work out some beneficial system that would take us off the hook," he said. !te4v w j^4^'M *' w*' ifemM^v^ WHO LUXURIOUS FORTREL PLUSH 4515 E. 22nd ST. .
