'MDs' focuses on the human side of medical dramas By JOHN CROOK Zap2it In what feels like an unusually frenzied fall television season, the ABC medical drama "MDs" got off to a rocky start. It wasn't simply that the series, starring John Hannah and William Fichtner as "renegade surgeons" causing headaches in a San Francisco hospital, was launching in a Wednesday time period dominated by NBC's "Law & Order." In a perverse counterprogram- The Greatest Internet Provider in the World! "We are playing characters who deal with issues of life and death every day. This show isn't really about what happened today in an operating room," Hannah explains. "It's about how the people who work in those rooms live and cope with the responsibilities they are bearing. "Obviously, people who work in a life-and-death environment often are looking for release, and that's often in a potentially comic context, whether it's alcohol or drugs or sex." That's another distinction immediately noticeable about the ABC series. While there is no laugh track, a sometimes dark, zany comic sensibility prevails in many scenes, in striking contrast to the consistently earnest tone of "Presidio Med." The pranks that Hannah's and Fichtner's characters, Drs. Dalgety and Keilerman, play on their stuffy HMO nemeses have reminded many viewers of Hawkeye, Trapper and B.J., the "M*A*S*H" TV medics who routinely thumbed their noses at authority. "You can't make a medical show that has a comedic bent, that has two surgeons in the lead, and not think about 'M*A*S*H,'" acknowledges GaryTieche, an "MDs" executive producer. "If we get compared to that show, I would love it." Yet while both Hannah and Fichtner are adept at comedy — the former co-starred in the international movie smash "Four Weddings and a Funeral," the latter in sitcoms including "Grace Under Fire" — Hannah says he and his co-stars .are dead serious about wanting to get their characters right. "I realize I am working now in a medium that has such a vast social outreach, at least in potential," says the Scottish-born actor, who previously has done TV series work in the United Kingdom. "There is an enormous pressure we feel to be honest about what doctors have to deal with, and in a funny way that's the main thing on our minds. The question of success or failure (of the series) feels oddly irrelevant somehow. But it is very important to us that we feel we are being true to the people who do these jobs in the real world everyday."
