IMI INDEPENDENT-P«g. C-l Liz-Type News Hit by Vatican ROME (UPI)--The Vatican Radio said Wednesday night that the publicity given di vorccs and marital scandals threatens "the moral health of society" and insults the millions of happily married couples. The broadcast mentioned no names, but it came after weeks of p u b l i c i t y and rumors of romance between actress Elizabeth-Taylor and actor Richard Burton that were climaxed by Monday's announcements that M i s s Taylor will seek a divorce from her h u s b a n d , Eddie Fisher. Burton appeared on the " C l e o p a t r a " movie set Wednesday for work as usual. Miss Taylor, who had a day off In the shooting schedule, remained at her $3,000 a month Appian Way Villa. * · · · BURTON'S WIFE, Sybil, was reported prepared to fly to Rome from London today. London newspapers pave con dieting reports of how she was taking the rumors. The Dally Mirror quoted a family friend as saying Burton had assured her "there is nothing to fret about." The Daily Herald said she had collapsed Tuesday and was under the care of a physician. Walter Wanger, producer of the multi-million dollar film in which Miss Taylor plays Cleopatra to Burton's Mark Antony, said he does not think her marital troubles would affect her public ac ccptance on the screen. "I think her performance of Cleopatra Is so superb that the public will consider this above anything that has been in the headlines," Wanger said. The public \viil respect and admire her performance. * · * · "I DON'T want to comment on what has been in the papers. I simply say that when people see this film they--will--realize hcr-p formancc has been unexcelled by any actress on the stage or screen. Her performance will last long after the head lines are dead." | The Vatican broadcast said the publicity given scandals is "an Insult to the seriousness ... of marriage, to the concealed but daily heroism of millions of couples who' consider the family as an' altar." 'To many, marriage seems to be a game, which they start and interrupt with the whimsical fantasy of children," it said. * * · · THE PRESS, a l w a y s s e a r c h i n g for sensational news, finds the whims of these adult-children Interesting and vies In Informing the public about the latest Indiscretion, the most reliable gossip, and the most likely forecast," it added. · 'The'only fitting thing for certain events is silence. To ignore them is often a duty. To speak of them, spread them, celebrate them, repre sents a threat and an attempt to the moral health of society, an insult to the seriousness. In the honor, to the nobility of marriage."
