Reid slams 2 for Tar Heels Associated Press Arizona, North Carolina, Kansas and Kansas State advanced to the threshhold of the Final Four while second-ranked Purdue became the first top seed to bow out of the NCAA basketball tournament, joining two other Big Ten teams on the sidelines Friday night. In the West Regional at Seattle, second-ranked Arizona trounced No. 17 Iowa 99-79 and seventh-ranked North Carolina beat No. 10 Michigan 78-69, the second straight year the Tar Heels eliminated the Wolverines. In the Midwest Regional at Pontiac, Mich., No. 20 Kansas State stunned third-ranked Purdue 73-70 and Kansas whipped Vanderbilt 77-64. Both regional finals will be played Sunday. Arizona 99, Iowa 79 Ail-American Sean Elliott scored 25 points and second- ranked Arizona opened the second half with a 24-9 run. Anthony Cook added 16 points while Steve Kerr and Tom Tolbert had 17 each. Arizona, led by former Iowa Coach Lute Olson, also defeated the Hawkeyes 66-59 in Iowa City in December. B.J. Armstrong ied Iowa with 27 points. "They're never satisfied with what happens," said Coach Lute Olson, whose team won its earlier tournament games by margins of 40 and 29 points. "They're looking ahead. They want each game to be the best they've played all year. I'm confident they're going to do that because they're confident tl l e y.'re goingtodo that." N. Carolina~7i^Mfc~h7gan 09 The Tar Heels used strong inside play by Scott Williams and J.R. Reid to pulJ away from Michigan. Williams scored 19 points and Reid had 18, including a tip-in with 48 seconds to play. Sophomore guard Rumeal Robinson scored 29 for the Wolverines, 10 more than his previous high. But- Gary Grant, Michigan's All-American guard, sat out 10 minutes because of foul trouble and was on the bench when North Carolina took control in the second half. He finished with seven points. "I just think Carolina played very well," Michigan Coach Bill Frieder said. "We just didn't have the depth they have. Their inside game really hurt us. We just couldn't get over the hump in the second half." "We're extremely pleased to be in the finals," North Carolina Coach Dean Smith said. "We'll be a hard team to beat, but who knows what willjiappen." Kansas 77, VanderbiJt 64 Danny Manning was virtually the whole show for Kansas, opening the game with a 3- pointer and scoring 25 of his 38 points in the first half. Kevin Pritchard with 11 points was the only other Jayhawk in double figures. Vanderbilt was paced by Barry Booker with 22 points and Will Perdue with 16. Kansas led 7-4 when Manning began a 12-0 run with a 14-foot juniper from the right baseline 4:24 into the game. When it was 19-4 with 10:45 left in the half, Vanderbilt had two field goals and four traveling violations. "I can be brief," Vanderbilt Coach C.M. Newton said. "We got beat, I think, by a very good basketball team . . . and by a great individual player." Calloway Transferring To Protect Pro Chances FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) Rick Calloway says he was unfairly benched this season for not playing power forward up to Coach Bob Knight's standards and feels he had to transfer from Indiana to earn a shot at the NBA. Calloway, in an interview published Saturday in the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, says the schools he's considering include Kansas, Maryland, Ohio State and Xavier in his hometown of Cincinnati. Calloway, benched from his 2Va-year starting role midway through the season, didn't leave his seat during the Hoosiers 72-69 first-round loss to Richmond in the NCAA tournament and disclosed Monday he would not return to Indiana. The 6-foot-G junior, who would have to sit out a season before playing for another school, said teammate Keith Smart's pro stock dropped because of being benched at times during the second half of tho season, and he didn't want the same thing to happen to him. "I couldn't let (Knight) do to me what he did to Keith," Calloway said. "Keith started the season as a sure No.l (draft choice) and now, even though he played good the last three games, he's got to go and prove himself again in the camps. I'm sure I'll go to the camps, but I want all the doubts erased before 1 get there. "Besides, those people know how Knight can be sometimes." Calloway said he was forced to play out of position at power forward after Daryl Thomas graduated. "(Knight) harped on me about not lifting weights during the summer and I really didn't do what I was supposed to do," said Calloway. "But I wasn't planning on coming back and having to play Daryl's spot."
