Sales were 4.1 per cent higher but income was 5,7 lower than in the record first quarter (February-April) last year. "Sales and profits were extremely hard hit in Feburary," Gordon M. Mefcalf, chairman, told stockholders at the annual meeting, "As the snow piled up, sales and profits went down." "We believe the situation began to turn around in March," Metcalf added. "We had the benefit of an earlier Easter and profits equaled those of the previous year. In April profits improved in spite of one less selling day and without the added emphasis of Easter." E a r n i n g s for the three months were estimated at $46,788,000 or 31 cents a share compared with $49,641,000 or 23 cents a year ago. The payment was in cash but the amount was undisclosed. Sulzberger said facilities of the microfilming plant would be enlarged and used primarily to produce the Times microfilm edition. The Times microfilm is now produced by the University Microfilm Division of Xerox and by Eastman Kodak. "The volume of New York Times microfilm operations, both current and back issues, is by far the largest of any newspaper in the world and it warrants our having our own manufacturing capacity," said Sulzberger.
