Next Time You 'Raise The Roof Put In Plank And Beam Ceilings! Whether you are remodeling or building a home and whether your rooms are to have flat, sloping or peaked "cathedral" ceilings, you can give added personality to virtually any room by installing a plank and beam ceiling. Quite apart from its handsome looks, are practical considerations for using this type of installation. For example, if in a remodeling job you employ false or "box" beams in a flat ceiling, they often can enclose pipes that .might otherwise be exposed. In a new house the builder can install a plank and beam ceiling for looks alone but he also can call upon it to play a structural role. If the latter is true, he is likely to employ roof decking, which not only gives a paneled ceiling effect but also acts as subflooring for the rooms above or as the underside of the roof. Decking runs thicker than the ordinary board or plank. It usually is from two to four inches thick and has tongues and grooves for neater fit and greater strength. It also is available in a variety of machine-cut patterns. This gives it the appearance of paneling though it is much stronger. It is possible to use decking in remodeling, too, but unless the homeowner is knocking out the floors and actually re-building the interior of the house, it is more feasible to use standard paneling in a plank and beam ceiling than it is to buy decking, one ot the main functions of which is to act as sub- flooring.
