Win- HOUSTON (UPI) Houston quarterback Danny Davis passed for one touchdown, ran for another and sparked the big-play Cougars Saturday night to a wild 42-25 victory over the scrappy Utah Utes. Davis' scoring pass of 28 yards to Eric Herring with 10 seconds left in the first half followed a first- quarter, 74-yard touchdown run by the Cougars' Emmett King and gave Houston its first lead at 14- i r\ IV. The Cougars, stymied by three lost fumbles in the first half and stunned by an explosive Utah offense, marched 82 yards on their first possession of the second half for a 21-10 lead on Randy Love's 5-yard scoring run. Utes quarterback Randy Gomez, however, kept his team in the game with touchdown passes of 16 yards to Frank Henry, 50 yards to Jim Teahan and 25 to Scott Folsom. It took a 21-yard touchdown run of an intercepted pass by Houston's David Hodge to boost the Cougars' advantage early in what turned out to be a 21-point fourth quarter. Davis finally put the game away with a 3-yard touchdown run with five minutes to play. Backup quarterback Delrick Brown added a scoring run of 9 yards on the final play of the game. Gomez' first-quarter scoring pass to Henry and a 27-yard field goal by Jeff Hucko with 42 seconds left in the first half boosted the Utes to a 10-7 lead. Before halftime, Davis, a senior quarterback who sat out most of last season with a shoulder separation, moved the Cougars 67 yards in three plays and capped the drive with the touchdown pass which Herring caught diving in the end zone. The victory was Houston's first of the season after suffering an upset 17-3 ioss at Memphis State a week ago. The 5-fool-9 Gomez passed for 205 yards despite having three of his passes batted down by defensive linemen. Utah tailback Del Rodgers, who rushed for 127 yards, set up the Utes 1 first touchdown with a 38- yard run on a draw play. Rodgers gained 31 yards on the Utes' march to Hucko's field goal later in the first half. Another Spirited Look For Fall From... Heavy Wooden SCREEN DOOR 25 HEAVY DUTY SCREEN DOOR. WIDE STYLES.
