INDOOR GARDENING Cover A Too Sunny Window With Living Vine-Curtains By KATHERINE B. WALKER Are you suddenly bothered by glare in your eyes because the sun has moved on its axis? Or perhaps an old shade tree lost limbs in the winter storms, and maybe a neighbor has painted his house a sparkling white that reflects too much sunlight your way? Whatever the reason for glare through a window, it can be unpleasant, and if you feel that curtains would not be the best answer, try using plants. In planning plant-curtains, remember that you will want to be able to clean the window easily. Plant the vines in a sill-sized planter to which you have attached a trellis the size of the window opening. Secure the top of the trellis in place with some simple device (a screen door hook will do). Then, when you want to move it, it can be unhooked and the trellis and planter removed as a whole unit. If the top isn't fastened to the window frame, there is a good chance that the weight of the vines as they develop will pull the trellis and planter over onto the floor. This can make an awful mess. Naturally, you will use sun-loving vines such as bougainvillea, jasmine or passiflora. Other suitable ones include Senecio confusus (Mexican Flame-vine), Morning-glory and thun- bergia. If you don't care for vines, try tall-growing plants that can be pruned to avoid a too-bushy look. To maintain a neat, trim appearance fasten the branches to the trellis as they develop. If several plants are grown in a relatively small planter, be sure to use rich soil, and feed them with soluble plant food if this seems indicated. Be regular in your pruning and training so that the plants will grow in the best possible manner for your purpose. Above all, keep the window sparkling clean, so that it will be a joy to see from the outside as well as from indoors. QUESTION: When can I take cuttings of my geraniums for winter-flowering plants? How are these cuttings made? A. This is a good time to take geranium cuttings. How to do it is fully explained in our brief sheet on geraniums, which is on its way to you. QUESTION: Would you please tell me if Hawaiian Ti plants- bloom? What does the flower look like? Is it possible to flower this plant indoors? A. A Missouri reader writes that her Ti plant is five years old and had a flower stalk about a foot long. The flowers were white, very small, and borne in a raceme. QUESTION: Some time ago you wrote about a plant called Piggyback, and said that new plants could be started from the leaves, because they form at the base of the leaf. If one of these leaves is pinned inside a lace curtain, new plants will start all along the edge, too. Did you know that? A. I believe that you are confusing Piggyback (Tolmiea men- ziesii) with one of the kalan- choes, which does reproduce from the leaf, edges. QUESTION: Can you suggest topics suitable for discussion al our garden dub meetings? On* group is composed «f oMer women, all of whom live · apartments or hotels, so we are not interested in outdoor garden material. A. Have you considered using Indoor Gardening columns? Yos might take turns in obtaining the plants described in these columns so that you could have live material to illustrate Ae study period.
