· · - Gtitiztn BUSINESS AND FINANCE THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 1968 PAGE 42 Technical Rally Starts To Falter NEW YORK (AP) -- Thei stock market's technical rally faltered early today as traders took profits. An early margin of 3 to 1 in favor of gainers was slashed to about 7 to 4. The Dow Jones industrial average wiped out its initial rise of 2.42 and showed a net loss exceeding a point. Many of the higher-priced glamor stocks were sold heavily by traders. Itek lost 4, Teledyne 3, IBM 4, Polaroid 3, Xerox 2, AMK Corp. 1. Control Data 2 and Republic Corp. 1. Golds recovered from early weakness. Homestake recouped more than 3 points. The speed of Wednesday's tedmical rally from an oversold condition aroused questions as to how long the advance could be sustained, especially in view of Wall Street's usual habit of evening-up on Thursday in preparation for the weekend. Aside from the rise in sulphuric acid prices, analysts saw no particular change in the news background. Recount Shows New Law Passed FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- A recount indicates that a city fair housin 0 ordinance has withstood a referendum aimed at repealing it. T h e o r d i n a n c e officially passed by 30 votes, the Genesee County Board of Canvassers said after a second recount of the votes in the Feb. 20 election. Following the second recount, the vote was: 20,170 for the ordinance, 20,140 against it. Grain OVER THE COUNTER Quotations from the NASD are representative inter-dealer prices as of yesterday. Trade was better than the average of recent weeks and largely mixed. Continued buying of gold at international market places by speculators who believe the United States will raise the price of gold from $35 an ounce brought in new buying of commodities. The U.S.- Department of Agriculture also tended to stimulate buyer interest with a report that more farmers were signing up under its program to divert corn and grain sorghum acreage this year and under its wheat allotment program. Wheat futures opened with -n advance and, except for several lulls in trade, stretched this rise to _ nearly one cent a bushel. There was a measure of profit taking at one time but prices again made an advance near the close. Corn and soybeans advanced about y 2 cent a bushel and fell back under light profit taking, only to advance again near the close. The new crop soybeans, however, did not fare as well, being under selling pressure with soybean meal. Soybean oil prices advanced under good processor buying. Oats and rye prices were irregular in light trade, and choice steers closed mostly higher in active dealings. At the close wheat was % to 7 /s cent a bushel higher, March 1.47%-%; corn was V 8 lower to % higher, March 1.18%-%; oats were unchanged to VB lower, March 79 7 /s cents; rye was unchanged to % lower, March 1.22% and soybeans were % lower to i/} higher, March 2.73.
