A'26-INDEPENDENT (AM) PRESS-TELEGRAM (PM) ion tn*. c«ni.. TIW».. jm. H, \m TPTin THOMF.Y * «*«^ ·*· -- -- -- --· (Continued from previous page) we ordered two of the nightly specials -- grilled yellowtail, $2.65, and Canadian whitefish maitre d' hotel, $2.85. No. 1 chef Julian Garza, on the staff 12 years, has the artist's touch in the preparation of ocean delicacies. The yellowtail. similar to swordfish, was rich and moist. The whitefish was moist, tender and delicately flavored. The accompaniments were bountiful. We had our choice of white or red clam chowder. \Ve chose the white and it was absolutely scrumptious, a;Boston style. We also received top-notch salads with a-really delicious dressing, shredded beets and carrots; fresh fine French fries or boiled potatoes with parsley . of rice; hot rolls with butter and superb tartar sauce. . ^ We had four-star attention from waitress Katherine I^vick, who's been an inn employe for 29 years. The service included white linen napkins and lemon finger · bowls. The inn attracts customers from all over the U.S. because they've heard that it has so many outstanding sea foods, such as whole lobster, steamed clams, scallops, sea bass, Alaska crnblegs, abalone, shrimp, halibut, fried oysters, jumbo frog legs, finnan haddie, soft shell crabs and filet of sole, $3.75 to more than $7. Also featured are a selection of steaks, French pastries, excellent wines and cocktails such as the big margarita, $1. A recent addition to the menu is epicurean bouil- . labaisse Marsellaise, the famous French sea food stew, prepared only moments before being served. It's $16 (Or two persons and worth it, because it includes whole lobster, steamed clams, scallops. Pacific red snapper, sea bass and Alaska crab legs. It comes with a light, pinkish broth, made with onion and heavenly seasonings. People really rave about it. The inn, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are many luncheon choices, including hot sandwiches and oyster stews. Whitefish mornay is $1.75; red snapper is $1.95 and yellowtail is $2.25. All are generous meals with soup or salad, potatoes, roll, butter. Verdict: Wonderful quality. Wonderful flavors. Wonderful prices. Everybody loves the Glide'er Inn. (Another fine waitress there is Flo Zuck, who has a big Mowing of dining fans.) ENTREES THAT PEOPLE LOVE TO TALK ABOUT -- Let me state modestly that I get around quite a bit. I visit many, many restaurants and 1 know which are doing great and which are just so-so. The food // Dim Out most popular dinner houses by far these nights are those with dinners under $4. The prices that really seem to work are those from $2.95 to $3.75*-- provided", of course, that the food and service arc top-notch. The beautiful Tenderloin restaurant, 4363 Atlantic, has its meaty prime rib bones (barbecued or plain) on special Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights for $2.95 a dinner. They're $3.50 the rest of the time -- and worth it. Other specials: Tuesday, old-fashioned meat loaf, $2.95; Wednesday, sirloin tips with noodles, $2.95; Thursday, baked chicken, $2.95. The house speciality is superlative, tender juicy prime rib au jus, $3.75 and unusually popular. Owner Madelpn Teei has fine entertainment Friday and Saturday nights in her redecorated lounge featuring the talents of The Two of Us, James Nipper on electric piano and Dewey Linehan on chums. Both sing, too. The deluxe Carr Brothers Restaurant and lounge, 3-!80 Long Beach Blvd., has a splendid new early evening special menu, -1:30 to 6:30 Mondays through Thursdays. Offered are such beautiful enchantments as filet of sole with sauce almondinc, $3.75; boneless stuffed chicken leg with almond and apple dressing, $3.75; baked ham with pineapple sauce and brown sugar, $3.75; Swiss steak jardiniere with a rich wine sauce, $3.75, and a splendid N.Y. strip sirloin steak with crisp fresh onion rings, $5.75. They come with soup du jour or extra-nice salad; potato or rice. Owner Paul Carr is a gracious, knowledgeable restaurant man who serves only quality food. The new nightly entertainer at the Carr Brothers is versatile Del Nadeau. Pretty Shelly White, young and gifted, plays piano and sings Monday through Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. And here's why Nik's restaurant, Cherry at Wardlow, is so popular these nights. Owner Carl Nickoloff and manager Bob Madrano have a different old-fashioned dinner special every night for $2.45 including soup and salad and other items. Among the entrees are such delectables as roast beef, tender and juicy; Swiss steak, sirloin tips, Hungarian goulash, Salisbury steak or perhaps corned beef and cabbage. Occasionally on Saturday and Sunday the price may be $2.65 -- still a very good deal, because Nik's is a quality house. The next musical variety show of Joe Linden's Kitchen Players will be offered at the Queen Cafeteria, 101 Alamitos St., Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The players are older Americans (that's a new term for senior citizens) who kick up their heels and have lots of fun on stage. HERE ARE MORE REASONS WHY PEOPLE ARE SPITTING MAD AT THE EDISON COMPANY -The company's financial statement reveals that it enjoyed enormous profits last year because heavy rains made relatively inexpensive hydroelectric power abundantly available. 11 also was able to buy plenty of cheap natural gas instead of expensive fuel oil.
