Woodgrained, factory - finished hardboards such as made by Ma- sonite Corporation, may be used to minimize later decorating. They are available at lumber yards in quarter-inch thickness. Cabinet doors up to 30 inches high may be made of quarter-inch hardboard. For doors not over one foot high, '.«" thickness may be used. Hardboard is popular for sliding door construction because of its inherent toughness and wear-resistance. Unfinished plain and patterned hardboards gain a professional look with a primer and two finish coats of paint or enamel. Any decorative covering such as wax, stain, varnish, shellac ; paint, enamel, lacquer, wallpaper or fabric, may be applied to the smooth Masonite panels. Packing should be done systematically, in each room. and each package or item labeled clearly as to the room in the new home in 'which it should be placed. "Breakable" and' "Fragile" labels also should be used. Consider Floors · Before moving, you should consider the floors in your new home. If they need recovering, it's best to dp it before'your furniture and appliances are brought in. To avoid scuffs and scratches that could occur in moving, it's wise to install a factory-waxed tile flooring material such as solid vinyl, which comes in a wide variety of colors and styles to fit in with your furnishings and decor. After setting the date with a moving firm, you should begin packing at least a week or two before moving day. Books First In packing, books should be first, since you won't be using them before you move. Stand them upright in small cartons. Records and record albums can be packed the same way, bul place corrugated board or thici Folds of newspaper between them and mark the outer label, "Breakable," or "Fragile." Glass and china is safest in barrels. Wrap the pieces well and use plenty of extra paper to fill in spaces so the glassware won't rattle. Wrap mirrors a n d picture frames securely in blankets or quilts and mark the label, "Breakable -- Mirror," or "Breakable -- Picture." Sheets and blankets should be placed in cartons with space left for last-minute packing of those in use. Seal Drawers Drawers need not be emptied if contents are unbreakable. But seal them shut. Problems in transporting clothing can be overcome by renting a rack on wheels or getting port- :ble wardrobe cartons from the mover. Foods and other things you'll need right away in your new home should be packed together and the box labeled. "Kitchen -- Keep on Top -- Don't Hide This." And don't forget to take a basket of food on moving day so you can eat your first meal before unpacking. THE WARM LOOK OF WOOD enhances this ultra-modern kitchen with a handsome, glowing personality. The solid beauty and practicalily of wood is ideal for wall coverings and built-ins. A distinctive "island" composed of stove and chopping block is shown centered in the room. Wood Proves Its Own Versatility In Use In Improving Kitchen Area Take a good look at your kitchen. Are pots and pans visible? Are you forever looking for utensils, hunting for table or counter space, and toting things long distances while preparing meals? If your kitchen suffers from any of these drawbacks, then it probably needs to be remodeled. Although every kilchen remodeling job varies with the need of Lhe individual home, all remodeling is aimed at making the room more functional, spacious, or at Those made of wood offer a tremendous variety of exterior finish, styling, interior space arrangement, a n d d i m e n s i o n s . Shelves and drawers, cabinets with sliding trays, cubbyholes, racks, rods and spinning "Lazy Susan" shelves -- all are convenience features in new cabinets. While cabinets are backed up against a wall in traditional kitchens, modern decor offers an alternative -- the "peninsula" tractive. One way to increase functional efficiency in your kitch en is to carefully rearrange your appliances, counters, and storage areas. If you have limited space, design a "U" and "L" plan for your needs. The "U" layout arranges kitchen facilities along 3 walls; while in the "L" two adjacent walls are utilized. The "peninsula- island" places major units against the walls while counter and storage space is unconnected to the other units -- forming an "island," "jcabinet. This unit juts out from I the wall, providing a space divider as well as storage. It is accessible from either front or back, so it's frequently located between | kitchen and dining areas. Wood cabinets also accommodate many makes of built-in and slack-on gas or electric ovens, 1 while island units accommodate sink and-or range while providing counter and storage space. Before launching a kitchen remodeling project, talk to a lumber dealer, building material supplier, kilchen improvement specialist, builder, or (in the case of more elaborate renovations), architect. Experts can give you precise plans, precise cost estimates, and, most of all, practical advice re- 1 garding the most efficient, mosi economical methods, of solving the kitchen problems -- by your self or by craftsmen. The do-it-yourselfer can also learn how much of the job he is equipped to do himself. With easy- to-use wood, it is easier to ac complish more, even with limited experience and tools.
