Martin giving a picture of A r i z o n a territorial history largely as recorded by the newspapers was released yesterday. "An Arizona Chronology," published by the University of Arizona Press, covers the years 1846 to 1912. Martin, who as a Detroit newspaperman won a Pulitzer prize, formerly headed the UA journalism department. He now is engaged in historical research. Signing books yesterday at an Arizona Bookstore party in honor of the event, Martin said, "Being a newspaperman, I tried to get the human side of history." "Pioneer editors and reporters were at their best in handling straight news and personals, and it is this which makes their papers so valuable and fascinating today," Mprtin says in an introduction. It is fun to wander through the oases of Arizona history coming out of the press. H°re are random examples: 1851. March 28 -- Famous Oatman p i o n e e r f a m i l y r e a c h e s t h e Pima villages from Turson. A few davs later, Indians slaughter the parents, capture two daughters and leave a son for dead. 1852. Aue. 3 -- Eiqht-hn dred braves from the Colorado tribes attack Ft. Yuma Mai. Heint7elman's troops decisivelv defeat Indians. 1860, Aug. 26 -- Mark A. Aldrich, Tucson businessman, s made alcalde (judge) but resigns in disgust because citizens refuse to make complaints about crime. 1861, July 21--Seven men guarding a Mail coach en route to Tucson and the coast are trapped in Cook's Canyon by 300 Apaches under Cochise and Mangas Coloradas. Battle lasts three days. Cochise later said he lost 125 braves before guards were wiped out. 1868, Sept. 25--Arizona territory becomes a separate Roman Catholic Diocese under Bishop J, B. Salpointe. 1870, Dec. 23--U.S. Census reports Arizona population is 9,658. Total value of major metals production, $800,000. Total value of all cattle, $250,000; value $4,255,000. 1873, Aug. 6--Law and Order Society of Tucson lynches four murderers from gallows in Court Plaza on Pennington Street. 1877, Sept. 3--Ed Schieffelin records first Tombstone silver claim. 1881 March 23--Water appears in the rich silver mines of Tombstone. 1881, June 28--Dr. James Douglas begins development of Atlanta copper claim for Phelps Dodge Co. 1881, July 14---Tucson has first legal hanging in Pima County. 1881, Oct. 26--Earps, Clan- tons and McLowrys stage battle at OK Corral in Tomb- stone. T h r e e die, two wounded in 30 seconds. 1886, May 21--Tucson cit- zens claim 100 men, women and children have been killed by Geronimo's Apaches and appeal to Gov. Zulich to do something about the raids. 1889, Jan. 7--Three Mexican sheepmen are killed in a fight with cowmen near Solo- monville. 1891, Jan. 16--Herd of 2,000 steers passes through Tucson as cattlemen continue drives to coast to avoid railroad charge of $7 a head. 1904, Aug. 14--Tucson police begin series of raids designed to close city's opium dens. 1905, Nov. 10 -- Tucson schools so crowded two pupils occupy one seat. 1906, Jan. 7--Five hundred Tucson citizens petition council to enforce ordinance forbidding spitting on sidewalks. 1907, Feb. 20--Tucson justice court holds that cattlemen and miners way wear guns lawfully for two hours after arrival in town. 1908, Jan. 9--Era of the all- night saloons ends in Tucson as council orders them closed at midnight. 1911, Aug. 30 -- H e n r y Fountain Ashurst has a second tiff, this time in Prescott store with Michael Conniff.
