LSD Use Said Ebbing; Marijuana Up WASHINGTON (AP) - Two health directors have told Congress that, while use of the hal- lucenogenic drug LSD is decreasing in the United States, use of marijuana is increasing. Dr Stanley F. Yolles, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, said a key factor in the decline in LSD usage is the publicity given research findings on the drug's potential harmful effects. These findings, he said, "Suggest that LSD can cause severe psychotic reactions and may cause chromosomal changes not only in the cells of the user, but, for women, in their children." Dr. Dana L. Fransworth, director of the Harvard University Health Service, said "Use of LSD is decreasing all over ·the country" because "Students fearful of having chromosomal disarrangement, even though they are not sure what that means." Both men appeared yesterday before a Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency that is studying drug abuse and proposed penalties. In other testimony, a Defense Department spokesman challenged allegations of widespread use of marijuana among U. S. forces in Vietnam. Alfred B. Fitt, an assistant defense secretary, quoted from a letter in which Gen. William C. Westmoreland, U. S. commander in Vietnam, said the marijuana problem there "is 'best described as minor as far as the war effort, health, morale and morals of troops is concerned." Fitt reported a total of 5,536 marijuana cases had been inv e s t i g a t e d throughout the armed services last year, including 1,267 in Vietnam. The Vietnam total in 1965 was 43 out of 552 overall investigations. U. S. troop strength in Viet- ·nam now is approaching 525,000. Ev To Give VC No Propaganda MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen s a y s t h a t o n e reason he defended the Johnson administration's Vietnam policies was to avoid providing propaganda to the Viet Cong. He cited a Viet Cong leaflet he said was sent him by a U. S. soldier. The leaflet, he said, urged U. S. troops to refuse to fight, demand repatriation and "get out of South Vietnam before it's too late." "And they quote the distinguished senator from Oregon, Wayne Morse, to prove the case," Dirksen told a gathering at a $100-a-plate Republican dinner. Morse, a Democrat has been a frequent critic of the war. PAGE 33 SAFEWAY i i Safeway sells only US Choice Grade Beef and 'Lamb Cuts. You can depend on Safeway Meats!
