Leonard Bernstein called him a genius and Eugene Ormandy has said that he is one of the great talents of this generation. He is violinist Yong Uck Kim, who will be the guest artist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra at its concerts next Tuesday and Wednesday. This will mark his third appearance with the Tucson orchestra. The son of a Seoul physician, the youthful Korean musician has been shining since he began piano lessons, which he hated, at the age of 5. He switched to violin at 6 and gave his first recital at 7. The following year Yong Uck Kim won the Korean National Competition -- performing the Mozart G Major Concerto, which he will play in Tucson -- and his career was launched. Pianist Rudolf Serkin, visiting the Kims' Seoul home, heard the young violin prodigy and arranged for him to study with America's foremost violin teacher, Ivan Galamian, at the Curtis Institute. While still a student, Kim was soloist with the Philadelphia orchestra, the National Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. He was 15. Kim's Tucson appearance will inaugurate the local symphony's new mini-season, a special four-concert series designed to accommodate winter visitors as well as Tucson music-lovers, with a savings up to 20 per cent over single ticket prices. Because four of the symphony's prime attractions fall within a two-month period at the height of the winter season, a package of concerts is being offered for these events. Soloists include Kim, Metro politan Opera soprano Mary Costa, pianist William Masselos and the Arizona Dance Theatre performing Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." Featured in the series, under the baton of conductor Gregory Millar, will be works by Copland, Mozart, Strauss, Moussorgsky, Ives, Haydn and others. Mini-season subscriptions will be sold through Feb. 18 at prices ranging from $10 to $26 and are available at the Community Center main box office only. Individual tickets for Kim's concerts are available at all Community Center outlets in a price range of S3 to $7. The program for next week's concerts includes Kim playing Wieniawski's Polonaise Brilliante in D Major Opus 4 in addition to the Mozart concerto. Millar will conduct the orchestra in Copland's " F a n f a r e for the Common Man" for the opening number and after intermission (he University of Arizona Choral Assn., under the direction of W. Douglas Pritchard, will perform Gorecki's "Ad Matrem" and Kodaly's "Te Deum." Virtuoso Yong Uck Kim Prime-Time Newspaper . . Tucson Daily Citizen 35 drug centers located throughout Arizona.
