OPEN 7-DAYS A WEEK Freddie Mabson Tidmore, the 22-year-old Long Beach man who for 18 months was a fugitive from prosecution for robbery and assault, Wednesday was convicted of three felony counts. The fate of Tidmore, whose t r i a l began two weeks ago, was decided by his nine-woman, three- man jury in deliberations that lasted less than 1 hours. The panel f o u n d Tidmore guilty of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and attempted murder in connection with the Dec. 20, 1972, holdup of the Wooden Shoe liquor store, 2053 Orange Ave. Jurors also convicted Tidmore on each of the counts of having used a firearm--a separate penal code violation that adds five years to the sentence for any conviction. IN ADDITION, the jury convicted the defendant on two counts of having inflicted great bodily injury on a victim--another separate code violation that adds a term of 15 years to life to the sentence for a related crime. Tidmore was accused of shooting liquor clerk John Bell five times in the course of the holdup. Bell recovered f r o m his wounds to testify against Tidmore in the trial before Long Beach Superior Court Judge John A. Arguelles. According to D e p u t y Dist. Atty. Allen Field, Tidmore can be sentenced on only one of the three charges since they all '.. Rose Hills is more than a mortuary. It is people. People who care... · \vho understand the problems and needs of their fellow man when care and understanding really matter. Rose Hills people cared enough more than a half century ago to create the world's most naturally beautiful memorial park. Those same people have cared enough over those past years to " endow Rose Hills with every needed service. In addition to the mortuary in the cemetery, there are chapels, flower shops, mausoleums and crematory...all at one convenient Rose Hills people cared yesterday. And they will care tomorrow. Because they ate dedicated to constant care. As long as there are people who care... there will be Rose Hills. MORTUARY/CEMETERY 3900 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, California -- Oxford 9-0921 stem from the same act. Normally, said the prosecutor, the most serious of the charges is the one on which a defendant is sentenced. In Tidmore^s case, he explained, that is the first-degree robbery conviction and its related allegations. .ON THAT charge, Tidmore could draw a prison sentence of 20 years to life, said Field. Witnesses testified in the trial that Tidmore and a companion first entered the liquor store about 2 p.m. and that Tidmore attempted to steal a bottle of whiskey. Bell, the clerk, testified that he stopped Tidmore and Tidmore left empty- handed. The clerk told the court that about an hour later, Tidmore again entered the store, this time to purchase liquor. Bell said he opened the drawer of the cash register, then looked up to see Tidmore aiming a handgun at him. Tidmore shot him three times and then twice, more as he turned in a stumbling attempt to run, Bell testified. AUTHORITIES said Bell still carries three slugs in his body that physicians can't remove because of potential complications. Field told jurors that, in addition to Bell's identification of the defendant, police lab specialists found one of Tidmore's fingerprints on a shard of glass behind the store counter. A $500 reward was offered through the Independent, Press-Tele- g r a m ' s Secret Witness Program for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in the case. THE REWARD was w i t h d r a w n , however, when Tidmore was arrested after a Long Beach policeman spotted him on the street. A f t e r jurors returned their verdict in the case Wednesday, defense attorney Charles Gangloff told the court that Tidmore was requesting immediate sentencing. Tidmore relented, how- e v e r , a f t e r J u d g e Arguelles replied that if he were to g r a n t that request, Tidmore would be expected to waive his right to file a motion seeking a new trial. The judge ordered a probation report prepared on Tidmore, to be in the court's hands by Feb. 13 when he is to be sentenced. Gangloff, who counseled W*I*N with further fantastic reductions now!
