PAGE 12 For Better ^Health ·','. Eczema '·'.: By S.L. ANDELMAN, M.D. V. * "Just what is eczema?" a -reader asks. "My grandmoth- . er has been suffering from ;:this disease as long as I can .remember but no doctor has ' /ever told us exactly what it ;'is." '- An authority on this elusive '..disease once said, '"Eczema -is anything that looks like .eczema." So it's a little diffi- ; cult for me to help our reader understand her grandmother's disease. It could be one of ..dozens of red, blistered, ooz- ; ing, scaly, brownish, thickened and itching skin lesions. . The symptons and causes of eczema are so complex that successful treatment demands ; a qualified physician. Home treatments often make the condition worse. * The first step in treatment is diagnosis, and this is more difficult if the patient waits until the eczematous skin eruption has been present for a long time before consulting a doctor. By that time, the skin may have been treated with many medications that may have modified its appearance. The doctor must determine how much of the skin eruption has been caused by locally applied creams or lotions, which may have irritated the skin, and what is merely the result of the patient's scratching or digging with his fingernails. Examples of what is called eczema include: (1) contact allergic eczema resulting from an allergy to poison ivy, sumac or oak; allergy to cosmetics, dyes or detergents; (2) subonrheic eczema, which has the appearance of yellow- pinkish, brownish, thickened, greasy skin areas; (3) nummular eczema, which looks like coin-shaped, oozing crusting patches, and (4) atopic d e r m a t i t i s , which occurs mostly in babies and young people with a predisposition to allergies. The progress of eczema varies from person to person. The blistering phase may predominate in one case, the dry and scaly phase in another. Almost always patients will suffer from severe itching. In infants and children especially, the disease may spread and sometimes cover the entire body. The infant may not be able to sleep and may cry continuously from the itching discomfort. F o r t u n a t e l y , modern medical treatments are usually able to provide relief for these cases until the eczema gradually heals.
