Bumpers Joins Dispute Over Medic Program LITTLE ROCK (AP) -- Gov Dale Bumpers disputed Friday a contention that a licensed physician must be physically present when an assistant un der the assistant physician program sees patients. The contention was made Wednesday by Dr. Joe Verser of Harrisburg. secretary of the state Medical Board. The controversy is over interpretation of Arkansas law. There is Verser's interpretation and there is the one by Dr. CW. Silverblatt. head of the program that supervises the assistant program. Silverblatt said the law could be interpreted as allowing the assistant to work without the physical presence of a doctor, but in communication with a doctor. In an interview Friday, Bumpers said he did not think physical pretenc* wat neces-, sary under state law. He said the law reads that there must be direct medical supervision of a doctor, "but I don't think this means he should be in the same room, and if he doesn't nave to be in the same room. 1 don't bee even why he has to be in the same community." . The case of 22-year-old Steve Peak, who is a physicians' as sistant, became news when i' was learned that he was oper ating a clinic at Lavaca thougl there is no licensed doctor a the clinic at all .times. STARRING: ANGEUA CARON · ALAIN GERMAINE tap: So "Irritated Long Time ncial Worker" thinks pregnant girls should be too ashamed to inish high school, and besides hey deserve "banishment." Of all people, she should know hat the better the education, he less chance the girl has to and on welfare. It's too bad ,hat social workers only see the 'failures" and other people who ire "down and out." Many succeed in spite of mistakes -if they're given a chance. As for the Puritan ethic, ivhich TLTSW wants to renew, I personally don't condone locking young girls up for six months, then leaving babies in orphanages, as they did in the "good old" Puritan days. I don't encourage unmarried preg nancies, but it does take terribly strong, self-disciplined and responsible person to accept her mistake, try to complete her education and carry her bahy.
