PAGE 24 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N THURSDAY, MARCH 10, Poverty Watchdog Aroused Threatens To Ask Probe d 5 '^poverty watchdog group" says be will ask for a federal investigation of the Tucson Committee on Economic Opportunity "if more poverty war funds are not funneled down to the poor." John Willis, president of AN1MO (Anglos, Negroes, Indians, Mexicans and Others), charged yesterday that the TCEO reneged on a promise to employ graduates, of a poverty war leadership training course in. the city's seven area councils "where they are needed." Speaking to the South S i d e _Yqung Democrats at the Round- Up Restaurant, Willis declared Jhat TCEO "told Washington it would take 20 trainees into the organization as aides in area council work and pay them. .TCEO got the money, but did not do it This is a violation of a public trust." ' Willis declared that four em- ployes at the "ivory towers 'downtown earn from $12,000 to $15,000 a year. Professional people are leaving their regular jobs to take these high paying 'positions. And they are taking work from people who are in 'the poverty bracket. "The program should focus on the needs.of the poor." ; Willis also was highly critical of the appearance here tomorrow of "Selma, Ala., Sheriff James Clark. . "It was very unfortunate that city officials and public-supported institutions in this town didn't get together to prevent his being here," Willis said. "I am not challenging his right to speak," he continued, "but he represents the death of . some 19 civil rights^workers in Alabama. v ^ ""Civil liberties in Tucson are having a tough enough time as it is without importing this man from Alabama." Willis asserted that ethnic groups have little voice in community actions, and "ANIMO is the first step in the Southwest to eliminate this condition." The organization was formed by leadership training course graduates to keep a critical eye on the local poverty war program.
