Sheimtirild On ridve By ALFRED SHEINWOLD "Hurran beings don't hav« enough horse sense," a rat remarked to me the other day "They look down on us for deserting sinking ships instead ol praising us for our shrewdness.' West then led the jack ol spades. South won with the king of spades and led a club to East's king. East was out of spades, thanks to South's careful play at the first trick, and could do nothing to defeat the contract. East made his best attempt by leading a low diamond, and West played the queen to force out dummy's ace. When West took the next club trick with the ace he could not run the diamonds. If West led the low diamond, dummy would play low; and if West led his ten of diamonds, dummy would cover with the jack. Either way, South had a second diamond stopper and was sure of game and rubber. West threw the defense away vhen he led a second spade. The spade suit was a sinking, ship, and West should have abandoned it. as H. D. Kelsey points out in his excellent new :jook "Killing Defense." Since South obviously has both the ace and king of spades. West should shift to the ten of diamonds at the second trick. Declarer cannot afford to play dummy's ace. If declarer play* the jack, East wins with th« king and returns a low diamond. Now the defenders are sure ol a I least two diamonds, two clubs and a spade. If South is not careful, the defenders will get three diamonds. South could limit the diamond loss to one trick If West led either the queen or the low diamond at the second trick.
