Ftb V. 1«« YOUNC PKOPI.K They Have Minds of Their Own By NANCY GILBERT The Youth Sen-ice 'limes change and so, Tiaiurally. do teen-ager?. Rut at no time has tlie rh.inge been so evident as in t h e past year. The big difference seems to be t h a i today's young people think for themselves. Looking over surveys in years past. I get t h e pen- em! impression that the hoys and girls tended to agroe with the ideas and beliefs of the older generation. True, even then they complained ahnm t h e generation gap--hut by accepting without question the values of their parents, they gave support, unconscious as it might have been, to the old adage that parents know best. + * * * TODAY'S young people, as indicaied hy last year's surveys, may agree with their parents on some issues, but only after careful evaluation. Surprisingly, despite all the talk ahoul our permissive society, t h e one area where there is the least evidence of a generation gap is on the boy-girl moral front. Three quarters of boys and girls still feel that a wise teener doesn't throw a party unless an adult, is present to assure order and SO per cent still believe that marriage is necessary despite the trend to new freedoms. In other areas, most specifically t h o s e o n t h e light side, 1B6S teens d i f - fered little from those of 10 years before. * * * * THEY still listen to rock 'n' roll, buy records hy the scorn, think candy is dandy, want larger allowances because they feel the pinch of the rising cost of living, fight with their parents to choose their own clothes and violently put down t h r delinquent m i n o r i t y who seem to give a bad name to all members of the younger generation. And, in the days of unisex, young people still f i n d the opposite sex most altractive; 90 per cent say that coed classes are groovier than separate education and nearly 100 per cent enjoy a party. Abandoned Rahy Found in Hollywood HOLLYWOOD (CNS) -A baby girl was found abandoned Wednesday in the elevator of a Hollj wood apartment house. The brown-haired, blue eyed child, about one month old, wore a nightgown with embroidered yellow horses and yellow booties. She was wrapped in two blankets -- one green and one pink -- and a purple coverlet. Diapers and a milk bottle were inside the blankets. There was no note. Ax Me ~No Question Q. Did George Washington really chop down the cherry tree? D. I)., Long Beach. A. The story is doubted by many modern historians. The cherry tree legend is recorded in an 1808 biography of "G. Washington, Esq." by Parson Mason Weems. According to the parson, after George cut down the cherry tree he bravely cried out, "I can't tell a lie, Pa; you know I can't tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet." His father replied, "Run to my arms; glad am I, George, that you killed my tree, for you have paid me for it a thousandfold. Such an act of heroism in my son is worth more than a thousand trees, though Newest 1969 30-GALLOK CAS WATER HEATER OLASSLINEO Mode By REPUBLIC $ 36 50 Full 5-Yeor Guarantee on wattrtonk. Q. !s it t r u e that a rat can see better in the niphi t h a n the day'. 1 N. V., Long Beach. A. It's debatable whether cats have nine lives, but many have lived to be more than 20 years old. According to the "Guinness Book of World Records" a female tabby named Ma is the oldest cat on record. Ma was 35 years old, when she was put to sleep on November 5, 1957. Dr. Robert 1.. Stansbury, a Pasadena veterinarian who specializes in cats, told TEEN ACTION LINE that many cats do not live past their f i f t h year because of diseases and car injuries. He added that cats enter middle age between 10 and 12 years. "However, I have known many cats that have lived to be more than 20 years old, and one of my fellow veterinarians has a 23- year -old cat still in good health. I think the life expectancy for cats is increasing, because they are getting better food and better care," he said. On the question of cats set-ing better at night, Dr. Stansbury said that cats are naturally nocturnal animals and see best in a dim light. A cat's pupils contract by day and expand at night. A cat cannot see in total darkness, however. GRAND OPENING S V j x n - 3 0 Lb. Bond, White r Color. Black Ink, One Side. · Legol, Business forms, Directories. ·11x17 Stock. Brochures. Menus. In an article in the Critic for February, 1904, Joseph Rodman discusses the legend and refers to Weems' admission in a letter to a friend that he introduced imaginary anecdotes into the book for their "good effect." Actually, very little is known of Washington's early childhood, spent on the Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River opposite Fredericksburg, Va. Rupert Hughes in his book, "George Washington, the Human Being The Hero," claims that "it was this gap that Parson Weems filled up with such a slush of plagiarism and piety." He maintains that the result of these anecdotes is "to make George Washington almost as much of an odious prig as it makes the se:i captain who fathered him. Some points of Washington's early life have been verified. He attended school irregularly between the ages of 7 and 15, but became well trained in mathematics and geography. He mastered tobacco growing and stock raising and early in his teens he was familiar enough with surveying techniques to plot the fields about him. One of his first jobs was as a surveyor.
