"It aroused, amused, in- termed, excited and fascinated a generation bracketed .between two world wars. It was teacher, companion, confidante, clown and clergyman." These words lead off a story publicizing a television special that airs from 9 to 10 tonight on Channel a. Tire special, titled "The Good Old Days of Radio," was produced -by KCET (Channel 28) in -Los Angeles for airing nationwide on P u b l i c Broadcasting Service stations. I could be wrong, of course, but I have a feeling that this nostalgic look programming than most public TV programs do. Who among us who is over 30 doesn't hold font! memories of radio in the days b e f o r e television entered our lives? Yes, Junior, there was a time when there was no such thing as television. THERE'S a film clip in the special of the late Fred Allen asking Titus Moody if he likes radio. Comes the reply. "1 don't hold with furniture that talks." But it didn't take most folks long to get used to furniture that talks. "The Good Old Days of Radio" features film clips and audio recordings from radio's beginnings to ils heyday in the l!)20s, '30s and MOs, as well as appearances by many stars from the past. Among those shown via film clips arc Jack Benny, George Burns, Mel Blanc, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, the Mills Brothers, Will Rogers, Ed W y n n and Orson Welles. I t w a s K a n t e r w h o labeled radio "the theater of the mind" and who quipped that television is too often "the theater of the mindless."
