C.10-4MDtrtNDiNT(AM) PRESS-TEIEGSAM (?M) t«* Midi, C»H.. tut.. i»*. B. i w TeleVues Stack in role of Houston By BOB MARTIN TV-Radio Editor Robert Stack's f i r s t television series was the f a m o u s "The Untouchables," which aired on ABC from 1959 to 1963 and is still being shown in syndication in a number of cities. Not a bad way to make a start on the tube. Or, as Bob puts it: "That's like seeing Raquel Welch the first time you see a girl." Stack, who started his acting career in the movies prior to World War II, won an Emmy in his TV role as federal crimebuster Eliot Ness in Chicago's Roaring Twenties. His only other TV series has been "The Name of the Game." which ran from 1968 to 1971 on NBC, There's a possibility he'll return in a dramatic series on CBS next season as a cruise ship captain. He stars in the TV movie " A d v e n t u r e s of t h e Queen," which will air Feb. 14. and it could lead to a series. It was filmed, in part, aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Meanwhile, you h a v e the opportunity of seeing Stack this evening in a one-hour d r a m a , "The Honorable Sam Houston," latest of the "American Heritage" specials. It's on ABC (Channel 7) at 8:30. S. senator f r o m 1846-1859 and t h e n became governor of the state in 1859. Tonight's d r a m a , however, focuses not on one of his triumphs but rather on a defeat. It deals with his unsuccessful e f f o r t s to keep Texas from seceding from the Union and joining the Confederacy. For his portrayal of Houston, Stack has been made to appear about 20 . years older and 30 pounds heavier than he is. Lynn Carlin, who costarred w i t h D i c k Van Dyke in the TV movie "The M o r n i n g After," portrays Houston's wife, Margaret. "RUNAWAY!" is the name of tonight's ABC movie, not to be confused with "The Runaways," which airs from 4 to 5 p.m. today as an "ABC A f t e r s c h o o l Special." Both are repeats. The film -- a 1973 TV suspense thriller about a runaway ski train -- will be shown from 9:30 to 11, a different time period than usual for the Wednesday movie. "Get Christie Love!," usually seen from 10'to 11 on Channel 7, is preempted because of the earlier drama special. Ben Johnson, Ben Murphy, Ed Nelson, Darleen Garr, Martin Milner, Vera Miles and Lee H. Montgomery head the cast of "Runaway!" "The Runaways," which first aired last March, is the drama of a small-town, 17-year- old girl who runs away to a big city and is befriended by a 12-year-old streetwise boy who tries to teach her' how to survive on the run. Belinda Bal a s k i and Claudio Martinez star. VIOLENCE in television shows and movies will be discussed on " D i n a h ! , " hosted by. Dinah Shore, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday on Channel 2. Dinah's guests will include producer-director Sam Peckinpah, who has turned out a number of violent movies, including "Straw Dogs" and "The Wild B u n c h " ; psy- choanalyst Dr. Judd Marmor, actor Gene Hackman and humorist Mort Sahl.
