Bhtwctt Batlg * Thuradiy, March 7, Pisi 7 Doctor Alvarez Dr. Walter C. Alvarez is · emeritus consultant in medicine of the Mayo Clinic and . emeritus professor of medi- · · cine of tbe Mayo Foundation. I get many letters from ;people who say they took some · medicine and were miraculous- 'ly, immediately and per- YmanentJy cured of some com' in o n 1 y l i f e l o n g disease. .Recently, a kind woman wrote that, on taking a few doses of ·a certain rhubarb laxative mix- -'ture, she promptly and per- "manently had been cured of ' migraine. ;. I was interested enough to .write to the manufacturers of the mixtures, asking what was in the drug. When they told me, I could not see anything in it ex. cept mild-acting medicines de- Signed to relieve constipation. .VI could not, determine anything ;;which could conceivably cure a ·patient with migraine. · What, then, happened to · cause the woman to feel better? "Probably what we physicians '/call a "remission." In many , .chronic diseases, there are times .; when the symptoms flare up and ··become severe, and then they · may go away for years at a time. '.' For instance, a woman wrote ! me that years ago, when she /.reached 40, her epilepsy quit and never came back. Often a · fine person writes that he or she · was miraculously cured of some ·'disease by some simple weak .'.drug, but when I try it on a num- V.ber of my patients with the ·;same disease it has absolutely ··no effect. ·· This sort of thing happens so '·often that many a time, when a '..patient reports that the medi "cine I gave him cured him over ;;night, I wonder whether it real ;--ly did or if his full expectation ··of a cure worked as well as a '·pill. V. A woman told me she ha Vbeen cured of a lifelong con ;;stipation by one spinal adjust ; ment. The reason why I did no ··start making spinal adjust --merits on my patients with con ". stipation is that recently I saw several women who said thej ·were cured of a lifelong con stipation by my injunction no · · to woiry so much about missin; a bowel movement. . One reason why I am such '."strong believer in the effects o ./the mind on the body is that in ;.7ny boyhood in Hawaii, if a na :'-tive was told a kahuna (witc -'·doctor) was "praying him ti -.-death," he sat down on a ma ".'and died. And my physician-fa ".ther never once was able to tal .the fellow out of his fright whe ·;he knew he' was supposed t : die. The reverse of this is th · cure worked by a Christian 'Science practitioner. ",'. And so I must say to the kin ".people who write to tell me hov ;;they got suddenly cured that -;am grateful and always inter · ested, and sometimes I can an .'·'will mention here the treatmen . .recommended. . One curious and fustratin "trouble about some highl · nervous and sensitive people i ·that they report they reacted i ^·'reverse to the drugs I gav Xthem. Thus, I may give an in .'.somniac a sleep-maker, t h a .works beautifully for hundred · of people but my new patien tells me it kept her walking the 'floor all night. And if I gave her · a stimulating drug to keep her ".from dropping off to sleep at :;her typewriter, she tells me it ;;.kept her drowsing from morn- · ing till night! Give such a wom- ·an a dose of morphine and, instead of quieting down, she will feel like climbing the walls like a crazed cat. Such drug reac- .tions tell me I am dealing with ; a person with an erratic nervous system. LOSS OF TEETH · An interesting release from ', the Department of Health, Edu- Vcation and Welfare tells us that ..50 per cent of adults 65 years ·.and older have lost all of their ·-original teeth. About 80 per cent --of those without natural teeth -had sets of artificial dentures '-'made which were considered satisfactory by an examining den- ;.tist. Figures show the person -·with a higher income and higher -·education tends' to keep his -teeth, while the person with a -.low income or a low degree of .'.education tends to lose them. -;· For instance, women who ·.;were earning less than $2,000 a ·year had lost about a third of ··'their teeth, while women with -incomes of at least $10,000 had -!,lost only one-ninth. The men ;;had a very similar'experience. ·.'Some four in 10 of the women "·with less than a fifth grade edu- "·catlon had lost all of their natu- · ral teeth, while only one in II "'-women having had at least a :]year of college had lost the teeth.
