Mart Rebound Slight, but Not Too Convincing By ED MORSE AP Business News Writer , NEW YORK (/P)--The stock market got up off the floo Monday, making a moderate recovery, after a bad serie, of beatings. It was the first time in four weeks that "blue Mon day" was not observed with a sharp decline. The rebound was on such small volume--2,820,001 shares compared with 3,060,000 in Friday's sharp retreat- that it had little air of conviction about it. Steels and motors were active leaders in the advance A number of assorted chemicals, electronics and rubber, rose as industrial stocks carried the ball. Rails and utilities did little or nothing on average. It looked like a technical recovery to market analysts although the news background was generally good. Auto makers reported big increase in production. Less pressure for an increase in the basic bank interest rate was noted Incoming orders, production and employment were said to have improved. JL jL. JL. THE MARKET ADVANCE, HOWEVER, WAS PATCHY A .number of high quality as well as speculative issues which have lost a lot of ground, recovered a good part of it. Union Carbide, for instance, won back 3 of the 10 points it dropped last week. Gains of fractions to a point or more outbalanced losers in the same range. Some advances went to 2 or 3 points. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.58 to 626.20. Of the 1,239 issues traded, however, gainers outnumbered losers by only 535 to 495. New lows for 1959-'60 totaled 48. For the first time since Aug. 21, 1956, there were no'new highs. . The Associated Press average of 60 stocks I'^se 50 cents to $217.20 with the industrials up $1.30, the rails down 10 cents and the utilities unchanged. Nine of the 15 most active stocks advanced, four declined and two were unchanged. if if if STUDEBAKER-PACKARD WAS THE MOST ACTIVE stock, up 1% at 19!/2 on 64,200 shares. Second was General Motors, up 1 at 48 7 /, on 43,700 shares. Third was Studebaker-Packard (when-issued), up shares. % at Uy 2 on 41,900 Next came American Telephone, up,'4 at 80%, and American Motors, unchanged at 78%. Standard Oil (New Jersey) was the other volume leader Which closed unchanged. Active gainers.included Ford up I'/i, General Electric ZVs and Aluminium Ltd. %. Western Union lost 114 in heavy dealings. Thiokol, Allis Chalmers and Brunswick- Balke were active fractional losers. Polaroid was clipped for a 4'4-point loss and International Paper dropped 3. Gains of 3 points apiece were made by Motorola and International Business-Machines. if if if INTERNATIONAL NICKEL PROPOSED a 2-for-l stock split and a raised dividend. The stock rose 1%. Westinghouse Electric rose 2 and General Electric 2/. Gains of a point or better were made by such stocks as Chrysler, DuPont, Standard Oil of Indiana, Goodyear and Republic Steel. American Stock Exchange prices were mixed. Volume slipped to 990,000 shares from 1,090,000 Friday. Webb Knapp. the Ir.nder in activity, closed unchanged Cenco Instruments lost 1% and Molybdenum 2i/j. Silver Creek Precision, Creole Petroleum and Fairchild Camera were among gainers.
