Friday Morning. September 22,1978 (Ehv NFL List Of Unbeaten Teams To Be Cut To One This Weekend _ .._ . . -, _ __. i _ _ r . !__._»i___* . • >li 1-* «MSiir\r*ir iirMIT IIP NEW YORK Only two teams remain unbeaten in the American Conference and by Sunday night, there should be just one. The Pittsburgh Sleelers, who most people expected to be undefeated at this stage, play host to the surprising Cleveland Browns, who most expected to be winless at this point of the season. The Browns, however, have played steady football under new coacli Sam Rutigliano and Sunday's duel for the Central Division lead will show just how far Cleveland has progressed, Pittsburgh has history on its side. The Steelers have beaten Cleveland eight straight times at Three Rivers Stadium and have won seven of the last eight games over all. The Steelers looked awesome in ripping Cincinnati 28-3 last week and Terry Bradshaw has put together three consecutive 200-yard passing games. Cleveland, which doesn't have the big names of Pittsburgh, has a potent enough offense of its own. Greg Pruitt ranks as one of the top running backs in the NFL and Brian Sipe has been impressive in moving the offense. The Browns became the first team in more than two years to score more than two touchdowns against the Falcons at Atlanta. The other key games Sunday are Los Angeles (30) at Houston (2-1) and New England at Oakland. Here's the way the NFL shapes up this weekend. Sunday Pittsburgh 30, Cleveland Free Agent Salary Now $73,644 NEW YORK (UPI) — The National Football League's 84 free agents who signed contracts this year received an average salary increase of 27.8 percent, the NFL Management Council said Thursday. Based on figures provided by the league office, the average salary of free agents rose from $57,629 in 1977 to $73,644 this season, a Management Council spokesman said. Ninety-three players qualified as free agents at the end of iast season, but nine either retired or are playing in Canada. 13 — Steelers have too much offense and Browns haven't faced a quarterback this year with Bradshaw 1 s potential. Houston 20, Los Angeles 14 — Oilers always tough at home and Rams could be gliding after big win over Dallas. Oakland 27, New England 17 — Raiders breezed last week while Patriots have to contend with Monday night upset loss and cross- country trip. Washington 27, New York Jets 24 — Joe Theismann is hot passer and Skins have enough offense to keep ball away from dangerous arm of Jets QB Richard Todd. Dallas 37, St. Louis 6 Cowboys will be home and angry over loss to Los Angeles. Cards can't even score against mediocre teams much less Dallas. Tampa Bay 20, Atlanta 14 — Bucs finally broke into win column last week after giving two games away. Falcons can't rely on defense for big plays any more. Miami 31, Philadelphia 27 — Shootout time in Philly. Dolphin offense will score. Big question is whether Miami defense can contain Eagle QB Ron Jaworski. Denver 30,.Kansas City 0 — Chiefs can only run and you simply do not run against Broncos — if you want to win, that is. San Diego 31, Green Bay 10 — Chargers ready to explode after a couple of last minute losses to Oakland and Denver. Oakland burst Packers' bubble last week. Buffalo 17, Baltimore 1:5 — Colts may have roughed up New England Monday night but hungry Bins are extremely tough at home. Seattle 28, Detroit 10 — Seahawks finally got their act together with victory over Jets. Lions playing like a team in a daze. New Orleans 24, Cincinnati 17 - Saints playing respectable football and can score. Inept Bengals have even diehard Cincinnati fans shaking their heads. New York Giants 27, San Francisco 10 — Giants another club playing well in past two weeks. 49ers starting to look like an expansion club. Monday night Minnesota 16, Chicago 7 — It's time Vikings got back into NFC Central race. Bears are 3-0 but their three victims total one victory between them.
