The star known for playing eccentrics in cult favorites such as •"Ed Wood" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is establishing himself as a major box office draw with two films in the top five. • "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," starring Antonio Banderas as a mariachi-musician gunslinger and Depp as a sleazy CIA agent*, debuted in first place with $24 million, according to industry estimates Sunday. It was Depp's second consecutive No. 1 debut after the summertime hit "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." . "Pirates," still performing strongly in its 10th week of release, came in at No. 5 with $4.6 million. So far, it has earned $288 million, making it the second highest- grossing movie of the year, behind "Finding Nemo." The first weekend's ticket sales .for "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" nearly matched the total $25.4 million theatrical gross for 1995's "Desperado," which starred Ban- derasbutnotDepp. Ticket sales overall bounced back from last weekend's dismal earnings of $5p.5 million, the lowest box office weekend in two years with "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" at No. 1. This weekend, "Dickie Roberts" fell to fourth place with $5 million. The top 12 movies grossed $73.5 million, up 45 percent from last week and about 1 percent from last year, when "Barbershop" arid "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" topped the box office. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at North American theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. 1. "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," $24 million. 2. "Matchstick Men," $13.3 million. 3. "Cabin Fever," $8.5 million. 4. "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star," $5 million. 5. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," $4.6 million. 6. "Freaky Friday," $4.1 million. 7. "Jeepers Creepers 2," $3 million. 8. "Open Range," $2.809 million. 9. "S.WAT.", $2.800 million. 10. "Seabiscuit," $2.7 million. GOLDILOCKS GUILTY People dressed as The Three Bears, along with their bear prosecuting attorney, awaited the verdict Sunday in the mock trial of Goldilocks at the Washington University Law School in St. Louis, Mo. Goldilocks was found guilty of trespassing and was ordered to pay for a chair she broke. The trial was part of a celebration marking Washington University's 150th anniversary. . Governor. David breaks into JDorian's house, looking for the necklace and Dorian doesn't ! think twice about calling the cops. ! THIS WEEK: Flynn goes after iWalker. Natalie is stumped when 'one of her checks bounces. j GENERAL HOSPITAL — The ,sight of Liz's unconscious body after being hit by a car brings a smile to'Faith's face. Her grin grows larger when Ric not only agrees to leave Liz, but to leave town... with Faith! He's later shocked when Liz accuses him of running her down with his car and he's arrested. Sonny tells Scott of Ric's beat up car, which is just another piece of evidence against Ric. Kyle shares with the gang that he saw a blond woman standing over Liz's lifeless body after the accident. THIS WEEK: Liz tells Jason of her latest ordeal. Cindy shows up on the Quartermaine front porch, claiming that Ned raped her. PORT CHARLES — Rafe starts to worry when Alison doesn't return home. Liwie wishes on Caleb's ring mat he would have the most passionate night of his life, naturally assuming that it would be with him. When he also doesn't come home, she too starts to grow nervous. Jamal walks in on Imani, who is packed and ready to leave Port Charles. She tells him that the person who killed her professor is also obsessed with her. She continues, saying that the murderer is a sheriff who framed her for the crime. THIS WEEK: Jack kisses Liwie. Caleb fires everyone and disbands the band. '. PASSIONS — Chad is concerned that Whitney has opened a Pandora's box by playing matchmaker with Theresa and Fox. Meanwhile, Theresa thinks she is playing along with Fox to make Ethan jealous and gives Fox a passionate kiss. At the same time, TC turns over a new leaf and promises himself that he'll forget about Liz and work fin her marriage to Eve. Liz, however, is determined to make TC break that vow. Fox and Syd form a pact to split up Whitney and Chad. . Fox and Theresa get passionate again to make Ethan jealous. THIS WEEK: Gwen is troubled by bad dreams about Theresa. TC does his best to fend off Uz. DAYS OF OUR LIVES — Abe makes a quick trip to the wine store at Salem Place, where he encounters the mysterious shadowy Ggure. The figure warns Abe: "he's back." Abe gives chase but loses the stranger. Abe notices that his shoes are wet and there's a puddle of water on the floor. As he wonders who could be back, he sees scrawled on the wall the word: Stefano. Tony asks Sami out on an impromptu date. At first Sami turns him down, but when she sees the drop-dead outfit he offers her, she accepts. Sami leaves with Tony and we see how upset Lucas really is. "Nicole has a nightmare of killing Colin. .THIS WEEK- Jen worries when she's unable to reach Jack on his cell phone. Philip asks for Belle's verdict: did Rex try to kill Bo and Hope? THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL — Ridge and Brooke make love and decide to elope. Brooke worries about Nick and goes to see him. Nick realizes she and Ridge are back together and tries to hide his feelings upon hearing this. Lt. Baker arrives to help Rick, Macy, and Deacon locate Amber. Deacon leaves with the police to try to track her down. Macy tells an upset Rick that she and Deacon will never trust Amber after this stunt. Joe and Tilly agree Eric belongs with Amber, and so try to stop Deacon and the police from entering their trailer. When they do break down the door, Amber is driving away.
