Johnson and his honored guest, Mexico's President Adolf o Lopez Ma teas. After meeting him at Los Angeles International Airport, President Johnson escorted his guest to the University of California, a n d applauded (above) as President Lopez Mateos addressed the throng. Then, after receiving honorary law degrees (below) they journey to Palm Springs, where a crowd of 5,000 cheered in welcome. Amid the cheering throng, the young man at right seemed properly awed by his responsibility as he waved both U.S. and Mexican flags in honor of the two chief executives. Another tjpe of old-fashioned American welcoming committee was on hand (below) as the VIPs walked to their cars where they separated and prepared for diplomatic talks.
