Arthur Okun, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, spoke at a closed meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He was under pressure from its members to promise to keep the U.S. economy from overheating, The fear is that if the U.S. economy grows too fast, U.S. imports also will increase and with it the outflow of gold and dollars. A continuation of big deficits in U.S. international payments would further endanger the value of the dollar. 187 58Vi 187 581/2 47 26'/4 139 6Va 735 23% B 14'/2 11 l9'/2 16 25'/» 27 5 74 UVt 11 7! o 15 43/4 7 6% 6 13% 133 18 26 35'/4 231 6 10 10'A 7 22 Vi 15 48V* ZJ5 67 Vl 28 25% 105 43V4 47 6'/a 20 13 6 223,4 33 4'/2 452 15 148 24 40 25% 25 7'/a 2 22'A 4 3V2 21 SVt 121 78 3,4 54'/6 25'/3 53,4 22Va 14% 19 24i/a 43,4 SVt 6Vi 4W 63.4 13V2 16/4 33 5% 10 Vt 22Va 47% 67'/2 41 * 6Vl 12W 22V4 4'/4 133/4 22% 24% 73/4 3% 8V 7 56V2 -- '/B 541/1 - '/O 26/4 -}- Vi 5% 23% _ l/a 14% -- V« 19 -- % 24% -- "A 43.4 -- Vt 153.4 -- % 6Vi -- Vi 4'/2 -- 1/4 63,4 -- V'8 13V2 -- V4 17V« +'.'2 33 --1'/2 5% -- Vt 10% 22Va -- Vt 4JVi + % 67V2 4- Vz 24V2 -- 1/4 42 -- Vi 41/2.-- % 12% -- /2 22},4 4V4 -- '/4 4V2 + V2 24 -HI/S 24i/a _ 1/4 73.4 .... "To balance out, we'll have to go below that in the rest of this year." Okuu said if the President's request for a 10 per cent income lax surcharge is not passed, other methods would have to be used to hold down the U.S. economy. He mentioned monetary restraint. This is generally understood to mean raising interest rates, making it more difficult for businessmen to borrow money for expansion. It was the first of (our days of high level economic meetings in Paris. The OECD's economic policy committee is holding a special two-day session on U.S. efforts to contain the dollar drain. Then a special working group will discuss Prime Minister Wilson's efforts to hold down the British economy. Mexican Peso Shows Stability MEXICO CITY (AP) _ The Mexican peso is emerging as one of the most stable currencies in the Western Hemisphere, foreign banking circles here said. The peso already has gone the longest period in this century without a devaluation and appears to be stronger today than 14 years ago, when its current parity of 12.50 to the United States dollar was established. Evidence of how confidence in the peso has grown showed up last December in Mexico following devaluation of the pound sterling. Although there was a rush to buy gold, 'there was no exit of capital nor any heavy buying of dollars as previous international crises had precipitated, Moreover, despite the uncertainty of last year and the high rates of interest in competitive world money 'markets, a record amount of foreign funds was channeled into the Mexican banking system. Foreign money placed in Mexican banks increased 26.4 per cent during 1967 while total bank resources had an over-all growth of 19.6 per cent, up $1.696 billion from the previous year. Tills was the largest rale of yearly growth achieved by the Mexican banking system, according to the Banco de Mexico, the government central bank. In its recent annual report, considered the official review of the economy, the central bank reported that total reserves of the oeso were at a near-record $1.066 billion.
