r«lCrovrley. Reservation Plan Changed *?-- There'll be »ome changes made Sn tie Crc-srley Lake Krctta thu year. Most rioticeable wiB be, the method of tffcBngup for'renlal motorboats and boats without motors. ·; RAJ most of the Cn»rtey "regulars" know,_up until J98 such reservaticiis were made at the, Los' Angeles Cfly Han in person oa a certain day. That plan got en- itirety out of hand and became a three-ring circus, with' ; jjigiers-to-be carryins sleeping bags into the building and · tedding down in line for the 8 am. deadline.' -.So. last year the Los Angeles City Recreation and Farkv Department, which 'handles the Crowley program both la Los Angeles and at the lake, decided to try ij by djil^Tbai dldnt work out too weD.' , , . . . - ' This year such reservations win be made, beginning at 8 »*"-. March 16, at Eljslan Lodge, 1110 Stadium Way, rjysian Park, Los Angeles. Sigmipi must be made In per- |oo and the boats win be allocated on a firit-come. first- serred basis. " Applications ' or bu °y and/or dock space for privately launched boats win be handled by mail and allocations will start at the same time, 8 ajn. March 16, but letters wiH not be considered if postmarked prior to midnight March 15. Envelopes should be marked -dock space." A new fee schedule for Crowley goes into effect this year.'The Recreation and Parks Department spokesman says'that the annual loss in operating Crowley's short »eason has averaged J19,179 for the last five years. Th* LASPD doesn't intend to continue with such losses. -· - So here is the way tie new fee system will work: i*l~Boat Inspection-launching fee for private craft la^creased to $7.50 from JS. Dairy rental for motorboati fa- creased to J10 from $8. Daily rental fee for boats without motors Increased to $5 front $4. Season beach storage, to $30 from $20. Season dock itorage to $40 from $30. Season buoy storage, to $50 from $40, and overnight beach storage, to $1 from 50 cents. To those strangers in our midst who are hearing about Crowley Lake for the first time, permit me to say that it is one of the most widely acclaimed lakes in the west The LARPD gave it the title: -Hone of the Tackle- la a way. that is correct, for some of Crowley's fish trow to fantastic sizes. Mostly though, the lake is more famous for its great numbers of fish averaging about one pound each. THE LAKE OPENS THIS YEAR on May 2, which is the target date for an of Central and Northern California trout season. \Vh2e the regular state season lasts through Oct. 31. Crowley always ends its fishing on July 31. Department of Fish and Game experts have discovered that by closing the lake in midsummer, they are atle to plant rainbow trout that win grow to a pound by the following day. . The fishing pressure on Crowley is so tremendous that great quantities of fish must be planted. It's nothing unusual to see 3.000 boats on the lake the opening day. with up to 9,000 or 10,000 fishermen. Those of you who plan to fish Crowley or other lakes in the area should be making plans now. March is almost with us and time is shorter than you think. Among other excellent lakes in that area north of Bishop are June, Silver, Grant, Convict and Bridgeport- Last year June and Bridgeport provided tome great surprises. Anglers there were just as happy as those at Crowley, even happier due to ihe fact that they couH take a Emit of 10 fish, whereas fishermen at Crowley were held down to seven fish. Regardless of what section of the Sierra Nevada you want to fish on opening day. plan on ANY kind of weather and be certain that you take clothing to keep you warm.
