26 Phoros-Tribune, logcinsport, Indiana, Sunday, March 20, 1988 Gulf Foes Battle Iraqi planes hit Iran oil depot; tankers burn NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP Waves of Iraqi fighter-bombers pounded Iran's biggest oil terminal Saturday, leaving at least two tankers ablaze in the northern Persian Gulf. Iran said it shot down three Iraqi warplanes. Both sides fired missiles into each other's capitals and bombarded population centers with artillery for the seventh straight day, resulting in civilian casualties. An Iraqi military spokesman, announcing that two long-range missiles were fired into Tehran, declared: "We will make the Iranians live in hell until they :\ccept peace." The attack on the Kharg Island M terminal, through which 90 percent of Iran's oil exports flow, was the first in six weeks and came during one of the heaviest Iraqi air offensives against Iran in several months. The official Iraqi News Agency, monitored in Nicosia, said Iraqi warplanes and helicopter gunships flew 270 combat missions Saturday, including attacks on Iranian cities. Iraq also claimed that its forces killed or wounded 800 Iranians during an "abortive attack" by Iran in the central sector of the 730-mile front line on Friday. Iran claimed Saturday its troops killed or wounded 400 Iraqis in the sector but denied launching an offensive there. The Iraqi News Agency quoted military communiques as saying "a very large number" of Iraqi warplanes penetrated Iranian air defenses around Kharg in a major attack on the oil terminal. The report, monitored in Nicosia, said the jets bombed a tanker assembly zone east of the island. "Our planes penetrated the intensive enemy air defenses ... dropped their bornbs on many tankers of various types and size, destroyed their targets, set them ablaze, and left columns 01 smoke billowing over the area," a communique said. Gulf-based shipping officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that at least two tankers owned by the National Iranian Tanker Co. were "burning fiercely" after the raid. They identified the ships as the 316,379-ton Avaj and the 253,837-ton Sanandaj. The officials said an Iranian supply boat also was hit and there were casualties, but they had no other details. Ships in the area reported pillars of black smoke over Kharg. At least 100 people were reported injured in the storm, which hit late Friday, hospital officials said. Doctors said that 10 people were in critical condition. Police said the storm, with winds as high as 36 mph, ripped through the city. Hardest hit were suburban areas, where mud and straw huts collapsed, they said. Efforts were under way to restore electricity and telephone services. Israelis Keep Tight Control JERUSALEM — Israeli soldiers raided a hospital Saturday and detained foreign television crews, and the government banned a PLO youth group to keep a tight grip on unrest in ihe occupied territories, where Palestinian protest." subsided. Stone-throwing youths confronted Israeli troops in scattered clashes in the occupied territories, but no shootings were reported. Hospital officials in the Gaza Strip said nine Palestinians were admitted with beating injuries. A statement Saturday by the Defense Ministry said authorities had outlawed Shabiba, the youth group of Yasser Arafat's Fatah wing of the Palestine Liberation Organization with thousands of members throughout the territories. "Given its continuous involvement in the disruption of Israel's law and order in the area, and since it is an inseparable part of the PLO, it was declared illegal... Members will be subject to arrest and trial," the statement said. An army spokesman said troops moved into the Ramallah hospital in the early morning "to remove undesirable elements from the premises and return control of the hospital to the doctors and nurses." Salvadoran Election Today SAN SALVADOR, U) Salvador — Surrounded by soldiers, harassed by a guerrilla ban on road travel and wary of violence, Salvadorans vote Sunday for a new national legislature and municipal officers nationwide. For the fifth time since a 1979 coup by reform-minded officers, citizens of this Massachusetts-sized nation are casting their ballots in an open election. El Salvador has a population of about 5 million. As before, they are doing it under less than ideal '•'rcumstanees. At stake are all 60 seats in the National Assembly, the unicameral legislature. Voters are also electing mayors and municipal councils in all the 262 cities and towns nationwide. The guerrillas, waging an 8-year-old war against the U.S.-backed government, reject the elections as "a farce." They contend that, during wartime, popular will cannot be expressed at the polls. Associated Press Ferry Strike Halts Channel Crossings DOVER, England (AP) — Strikes by ferry workers crippled weekend travel between Britain and France on Saturday, jamming ports on both sides of the English Channel with long lines of cars, buses and trucks. The Dover Port Authority said separate strikes had reduced sailings to the European continent by 75 percent. It advised casual travelers to stay away. Ferries staffed by Belgian crews and traveling from Dover to Belgium were departing normally, but only one passenger ferry still was sailing to France, the port authority said. Early Saturday, there were about 250 cars and 100 buses waiting inside the docks at Dover, but the pressure was relieved when some of the cars were ferried to nearby Folkestone to cross the English Channel to Boulogne, France. About 400 freight trucks also were, jammed inside the Dover dock, and 240 others lined up along a cordoned section of the expressway leading into the port city. "It's a pretty desperate situation," said a port official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The Dover Harbor Board said travelers to the continent might have to wait up :!6 hours to make t)ie crossing. About 2,200 employees of P and 0 European /erries went on strike six weeks ago to protest ;>ie company's plan to cut 400 jobs and change •••.-rk conditions. COME SEE THIS ONE!
