The Beck's petrel was photographed last summer by an Israeli ornithologist in the Bismarck Archipelago, a group of islands northeast of Papua New Guinea. Hadoram Shirihai, who led an expedition to find the seabird, returned with photographs of more than 30 of the birds and a freshly dead specimen found at sea — evidence that has so far convinced several experts. Shirihai's photographs and his report were published in "The Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club" on Friday. MIT devises foldable car: Wouldn't it be nice to drive a car into town without worrying about finding a parking space? Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have devised just such a vehicle, a futuristic "City Car" that could even drive itself. A reason to drink alcohol People who do not drink alcohol may finally have a reason to start — a study published on Friday shows non-drinkers who begin taking the occasional tipple live longer and are less likely to develop heart disease. People who started drinking in middle age were 38 percent less likely to have a heart attack or other serious heart event than abstainers — even if they were overweight, had diabetes, high blood pressure or other heart risks, Dr. Dana King of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and colleagues found. Science news Wild bird positive for H5N1: A wild magpie robin in Hong Kong has tested positive for the H5N1 birdflu virus, the government said in a statement on Friday. The bird was found and collected on Feb. 29 near the Tai Po Kau nature reserve in the New Territories. Grand Canyon really old: The Grand Canyon, carved out over the eons by rushing river water, began to form 17 million years ago, making it nearly three times older than previously thought, scientists said on Thursday. The general consensus among geologists had been that the famed natural landmark in Arizona was about 6 million years old. Ring around Saturn moon: Saturn's second-largest moon Rhea may have a small ring around it—the first time a moon has been found to have a ring, an international team of researchers reported on Thursday. The findings from the Cassini spacecraft, published in the journal Science, will help scientists better understand how planets form, said Geraint Jones, who worked on the study while at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Tourism darkens lake: Sun Moon Lake has been compared to a classical Chinese landscape painting with its crystal waters reflecting surrounding snow-capped mountains. But a hotel building boom around the mountain resort in central Taiwan has locals and environmentalists worried the unspoilt beauty of the lake, which draws 3 million tourists a year, might be ruined. Caught speeding on camera, police won't pay tickets Aaoriatnl /'m« ROCKVILLE, Md. — No matter what the cameras say, some drivers are refusing to pay dozens of $40 speeding fines. Who? Police officers. In the last eight months of 2007, Montgomery County's new speed cameras recorded 224 cases in which police vehicles were recorded traveling more than 10 mph over the speed limit, according to department records. Supervisors dismissed 76 of those citations after determining the officers were responding to calls or had valid reasons to break the speed limit. But that left 148 who didn't have that excuse, and about two-thirds of those citations haven't been paid, said police Lt. Paul Starks. The police union says officers shouldn't pay because the citations are issued to the owner of a vehicle, in this case the county, and not to the driver. Police Chief Thomas Manger doesn't buy that argument. "We are not above the law," Manger said. "It is imperative that the police department hold itself to the same standards that we're holding the public to." Manger said officers who continue to ignore citations might be disciplined.
