Cook Recalls Almost All oi His Duty +' SAN DlhGO (UP!)-Sailor Thomas Cook bad been ihrouph it once before but forpot one thing from his military first aid training. "How do YOU out the umbilical cord?" he asked a police radio operator at fi a.m. Monday after helping his wife Mary deliver a baby girl. "Don't" the operator replied before ordering an ambulance to the Cook residence. The 20-yoar-old mother and baby were reported in good condition later. Cook said he had noticed his wife grab the sides of their bed in labor pains while lie was shaving and went to help her. "It just took about five m i n u t e s 1 t h i n k 1 was fairly calm," he said. Cook, 26, is stationed at the fleet anti-submarine school here and also has a d a u g h t e r , Judith, 1 4 months. Cook aided in the h i n h of a child in New Zealand once when he was driving past in a taxi and a n a t i v e girl asked him to help deliver her baby. Schools Segregated Schools in Los Angeles ; are "jusi as segregated, if noi more so" lhan they were four years ago. the ! president of the city ! Board of E d 11 r a l i o n ' charged Monday. The Rev. James E. Jones. ' first Negro to serve as i head of the school hoard, j atlribuied this "segrega- : tion" to normal growth of i the school system. i He noted he has been ; asking, since being elected ; 10 the hoard four years \ ago, "How do you integrate a system spread ' over 500-square miles . . . i with 70 miles between the farthest schools?" j During a news confer- j ence at the Board of Edu- | cation offices. Rev. Jones -- who seeks re-election this year -- noted the local district was "already ahead" of the recently-adopted state Board of Kd- ucaiion policy regarding integration of schools. The stale policy, approved last Feb. 13, calls for all school districts "lo exert all effort to prevent nnri eliminate all racial and ethnic imbalance in pupil enrollment." He said the Los Angeles s c h o o l s "have been complying w i t h the spirit" of thai policy since 19fi7. when the local board adopted a similar policy.
