Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Sunday, March 20, 1988 Lawman- Continued from Page 1 not the case. They investigate many minor cases, but not traffic accidents or related incidents except on special assignment. "Our biggest job is to interview suspects and witnesses and prepare probable cause warrants to present to the prosecutor," he explained. Smith said his most unforgettable experience was when his partner, Sgt. Glen Hosier of Logansport, was killed in 1971 while the two were working on a case involving the murder of a Peru woman. After pursuing the suspect, Linzie Mallard, for several days, police found him hiding in a Peru home. Hosier led a group of policemen to the house and at- temped to arrest Mallard, Smith related. "I was outside at the rear of the house with the troopers. Hosier went into the home with two Peru policemen. As he attempted to go up the stairway, Mallard shot him from upstairs," Smith continued. When the troopers came out and reported an officer was shot, Smith said he and Trooper Robert Burns went in under gunfire between the suspect and the other troopers and removed Hosier. "My most traumatic experience was seeing my partner lying in a pool of blood, removing him from the house, and riding with him to Indianapolis Method- REAL ESTATE 1CENSING CLASSES Begin in Logansport April 4th "The Knowledge Alone Was Worth the Cost of the Course" BEER SCHOOL OF REAL ESTATE (219)658-9264 Page 9 Bomb In Athens Bar Hurts 13 ist Hospital. He died 13 days later," Smith said. Mallard was killed in the melee which followed, during which tear gas was fired into the house and the structure was destroyed by fire. Smith said he has investigated some 25 murder cases, several of which were featured in True Detective Magazine. One of those involved John Wall of Logansport, who is accused of the 1979 murders on the same day of five members of his family and the attempted murder of his mother. One humorous incident Smith recalled was the Martin McNally skyjacking in 1972. McNally hijacked an American Airlines jet from St. Louis. Saying he had studied navigation, McNally directed the pilots on what he thought was a course to Detroit. But the pilots flew in a wide circle so that when McNally jumped out of the plane, he landed near the Mississinewa Reservoir in Miami County. The machine gun and $500,000 cash he carried were ripped away from him when he parachuted, Smith related. A massive search turned up the gun, McNally's clothing, and most of the money strewn throughout a soybean farm, but no McNally. Three days later he was arrested at his Michigan home. He was convicted later in St. Louis Federal Court. An original member of the State Riot and Crowd Control Unit, Smith also was a member of the radiological monitoring unit trained to handle accidents involving radioactive materials. He was one of five Peru Post troopers to earn the 1 million miles accident-free driving medal. President of the Fulton County Fraternal Order of Police four times, he chaired the group's annual country music show which this year will be Saturday, April 16, at . the Rochester High School Gymnasium. Proceeds from the show are used for community projects. Smith said that, since retirement, he is restless thinking that some of the cases he has worked on are still unsolved. "It frustrates me," he said. "Someday, that guy will come out and confess and I won't be there to hear it." Smith said he is glad he has more time to spend with his family — his wife Shirley and daughter Kara, a Caston High School junior, at home, and five children on their own. A stepson, Mark Rodriguez of Akron, is the Fulton County Probation Officer. "But 31 Vi> years of my life are gone. It's quite an adjustment," he said. ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A bomb exploded Saturday night in a suburban bar frequented by servicemen from a nearby U.S. Air Force facility, wounding four Americans and nine other people, police reported. A police spokesman said the bomb went off at ll:io p.m. in Oscar's bar near the U.S. base at Hellentkon Airport in suburban Glyfada. "It apparently was a powerful device placed in a bag hanging from a coat-rack close to the bar counter," said the spokesman, who was not identified in line with police regulations. No individual or group asserted responsibility for the bombing, according to police. Two Greeks were admitted to the Asklipeion Voula Hospital with first- and second-degree burns, Dr. loannis Tsigalis told reporters. He said five Greeks, two Britons and four American servicemen were treated for cuts and puncture wounds from flying glass and metal. "We had to extract some fragments of metal embedded in cuts, but there were no serious injuries," Tsigalis said. The police spokesman said the Americans were transferred to the hospital at the U.S. fase. A hospital official, who spoke with the condition he not be identified, gave the names of the Americans as Timothy Johnson, John Fines, Ricky Hoover and Larry Morrison.
