DONNELL IJLP£PP£R \Miat ll Takes lo lie a Sailing Man The fallowing few paragraphs might be called an aftermath of the Southern California Yachtin- Assn.'s 40th annual Midwinter Regatta, which ended Sunday in a rainstorm and which was thoroughly reported in Monday's editions of The Independent and The Press-Telegram. First of all. there are a few soggy clothes drying out in my garage. You see, I didn't wear all that foul- weather gear like those darned fool sailors were using in a storm that kicked up waves and swells 10 :o 12 feet. Fortunately, the Los Angeles Yacht Club cancelled the press boat for that final day; otherwise. I might have been out there with the Cal-40 Windhover, pounding to bits on the breakwater. All sponsoring clubs of the Midwinter--there were seven--cancelled on Sunday except [,AYC and Seal Beach YC. When the Seal Beach boats hit that heavy sea, skippers agreed down to a man to call it quits and go back to their warm headquarters at the Edgewater. But not so with the LAYC old salts. Out thay went, some to their sorrow, others to a soggy victory. When the trophies for LAYC's Ocean Racing classes were handed o u t , that liny clubroom at the foot of Barracuda Street on Terminal Island was a steamin° mess of wet clothes, flavored slightly by a few touchs of bourbon, scotch and vodka. SAILING MEN ARE A FUNNY BUNCH, and that's putting it mildly. When the U.S. Coast Guard hoist small-craft warnings, most rag men--that is what the power boat people, encased in their warm cabins, call 'em-- pay little attention. Most of them think that their . boats can take any kind of weather, stay afloat and not · get into trouble. Even a few of the Stars, IS-footers, had a go at racing Sunday. There were some rather mixed emotions among the losers at the LAYC headquarters. One prominent sailor, and I'm not going to reveal his name, told me that me that the race committee must have wanted everybody to commit suicide; that the whole tiling should have been called off Sunday morning. Call it bravery, courage, darned foolishness or whatever you wish, but some men who go down to the _ sea in ships are ready to keep on going down, and I do .· mean DOWN, if that is the way the waves must . bounce. In mentioning the fact that the Seal Beach YC started Sunday's races, then headed for home and grabbed dry towels, I would like to call attention to one couple, Dick ' and Barbara Lowman, who own a Columbia-22 and who sail together as a tnan-and-wife team constantly. Want to know how they celebrated their 21st anni- . versary on Saturday? Barbara crewed for Dick and they . squeezed out one of [he smaller trophies for their efforts. And Barbara, when I saw her looking like a drowned k i t t y Sunday night, was as happy as t h o u g h she had been sitting in front of a fireplace for three · days and nights. My friends, I guess thai is what it '.- lakes to make a sailor woman. OUTDOOR PERSONALS--This is for the benefit of :·· Harold Hultman Sr., 1600 W. 220th St., Torrance, who .. wants to know when the Golden Avenue Launching ... Ramp will be back in operation. Well, Harold and ail . the others who are seeking an answer to that question, ; there is little chance that it will be in operation before " late spring, or even early summer. There are several reasons, but the main one is that · the floods have filled that area of the inner harbor to . such an extent that it is impossible to launch boats ... there. In other words, a sand bar has virtually closed , the ramp, and new flooding isn't helping one bit. Larry McDowell, in charge of the city's Marine De- .partment, says that a dredger will go to work there as soon as the rains quit and it is feasible to move machinery into the area. There are other problems, too. Much construction - ; work is going on in t h a t vicinity because of the Magno. lia Avenue Bridge and the various on and off ramps. , So, Harold, for some time to come, it appears that you '. will have to use the launching ramp at the East Second '· Street Bridge. New Center Heads Hughes' Recruiting List for Next Year By DAVE Basketball season has concluded at Long Beach City College and coach . Rex Hughes is only catching his second wind. "I've got to gel a new post-man for next season," he says, readying himself for the recruiting job alicad. It was Hughes' first year on the junior college level · after four successful years · at Redondo High. His ini- ! tial showing reveals he is ; a comer after the Vikings compiled a 23-5 over-all mark and an 11-3 Metropolitan Conference record. "I'm kinda tired, but I got a lot of satisfaction out of this season. I'm disappointed that we didn't ·win the championship, but these were great kids and . they were great to work with." The players worked well with each other the entire year, which is evidenced 'by the final statistics. · Four Vikings scored · more than 300 points to ;. present one of the most potent scoring attacks seen in the area. But scor- . ing wasn't the only close ; department, as rebounding '- and assists showed good . balance and depth...
