WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 1968 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z PAGE 5 TO PRESERVE EARLY SCHOOL Tubac Historical Society Slates Ranch Home Tour By SANDAL ENGLISH Citizen Staff Writer "Maintain 14 soldiers. Plant 50 fruit trees.' Establish a school." These were the conditions laid down by the king of Spain in 1789 in granting land to Toribio Otero, colonizer, at what is now Tubac, in the Santa Cruz Valley. The pleasant valley, located south of Tucson, was then known as Pimeria Alta, or New Spain. All the king's conditions were met by Otero, including building the school --the first public school in Arizona. Sunday the Tubac Historical Society will hold a ranch home tour to raise money to preserve this early school, as well as other historic buildings in the Santa Cruz Valley. The original school was hand- built by Indians of ocotillo, with mud for the walls and mesquite for the rafters. There was a soil-packed roof and a hard dirt floor. Later the building was rebuilt in territorial style, with thick adobe walls, a tin roof, squat bell tower and tall, narrow, 12- pane windows. It stands today, flanked by St. Ann's Church and the preserved ruins of a crumbled Spanish fort in the square in Tubac. The Otero Ranch house, built by a descendant of the grantee, is part of the Tubac Valley Country Club. Tubac, which became part of Sonora, Mexico, came into the United States under the Gadsden Treaty of 1854. Among the homes on Sunday's tour will be those of Will Rogers Jr., Chester Crebbs, Gene England, Richard Bosse and Rex Wigham. The Rogers home is the old Garrett Ranch house, named for the rancher who built it 50 years ago. As the only two-story structure on the route from .Tucson to Nogales, in those days it was a familiar landmark. The territorial atmosphere of the house remains intact, with adobe walls surrounding a swept-earth patio. Furnishings are country antique. Known as the PM Ranch, the Crebbs home is a U-shaped ranch house furnished in Peruvian and Venezuelan antiques. Rock Corral Ranch, the England residence named for the Old Rock Corral in the Tumacacori Mountains, features a dining table of solid mesquite and other furnishings that date from the 1860s. The Bosse home, of tile and burnt adobe, is a contemporary design of Mexican territorial styling by Bennie M. Gonzales, and is located in Tubac Valley Country Club estates. The cattle ranch owned by Mr. and Mrs. Wigham is located on the south border of the Tumacacori Mission. A recent Walt Disney production, "Pablo and the Dancing Chihuahua," was filmed there. President of the tour sponsors is Wallace Vegors. He also is supervisor of Tubac Presidio State Historical Park. Tour tickets at $2.50 are available at Steinheimer's Books, the Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society, Tubac Museum, Tubac Valley Country Club and at the homes on the tour. MARKET DROPPING?
