HAYS DAILY NEWS Ski Ramp Aids Beginners LUBBOCK, Tex. (UPI) - _rhe blue-jean clad skier ba- lianced on the crest o( the •Summit, scanned the horizon Jfrom peak to peak and pushed loff down the mountain. 1 Upon reaching the end of the •trail, he turned around and [skied back to the top. I' The mountains in this case [are colorful dioramas on a I wall next to the shoe depart- I ment in a sporting goods store land the two-way ski hill in- I volved some props. "They (students) question whether it's skiing. When I first got on it I had doubts, but later changed my mind," said Mike Chandler, a store em- ploye. The IS degree ramp is 26 feet long and 25 feet wide. A nylon carpet moving at 6 miles per hour like a large conveyor belt gives the sensation of skiing on snow. "You really have to exaggerate your movements here," Chandler said. "You have more of a downhill fall- line. "The terrain is a little bit different, too. But we try to incorporate that line of thinking into our teaching." But he said the ramp isn't limited to' beginners. Many professional and ballet skiers use the ramps to stay in condition. "We can teach anywhere from a beginner to a ski ballet. We've had students from an 8- year-old girl to a 56-year-old man. "What's really nice about this thing is that a private lesson would cost you a little bit more than ours. The first time beginners get on the slope, they fall and get snow in their clothes. They get a little bit irate. "As far as skiing techniques, it depends on how far you go in lessons. The only problems you're going to have are lift problems." The store offers a basic beginner's package of five, one-hour lessons.
