MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1976 The Tucson Opera Company has received two grants, including its first-from a national foundation. The Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music Inc. has awarded the company a $9,000 grant to create a position of technical director. Of that, $6,000 will be given this season and $3,000 next year for the new post. "But the most exciting thing about this is that it's really our first recognition by a national foundation," said Bar-, bara Levy, TOC director of development. "Hopefully, it will lead to more." Mrs. Levy said the company also had been advanced a $5,000 grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Humanities. It had been prom- Two suspects misguided ised for June, if TOC raised $60,000 in donations and did not increase the $63,000 debt carried over from last season. However, opera company officials asked the commission to advance the award by showing that TOC already had raised $54,000 in donations and reduced its debt by $29,000. Mrs. Levy said some of the debt reduction came because some board members converted their loans to the company into donations. Part of that grant will be used to pay immediate bills left from an unprojected deficit from the company's last production, "Cavalleria Rusti- cana" and "I Pagliacci." Mrs. Levy said a special benefit performance donated by the cast, chorus, orchestra and technical staff raised $4,000, more than any other single fund-raising event. She praised the cast and the people who supported the compa- ny by buying tickets. Other fund raising efforts are under way to pay the rest of the immediate bills,' she HOLLYWOOD (UPI) -James King, 24, and Harvey Perry, 23, apparently have a bad sense of direction. They were driving an allegedly stolen car, pursued by police, when the auto crashed into a fence at the rear of a police station. King was arrested, but Perry scaled a seven-foot-high fence -- into the station parking lot, where he was nabbed. ^PACK-EM INN RIVER SALOONWe LUNCHEON SPECIALS!
