"It is clear," said Sen. Robert G r a h a m "that tourism, w h i c h h a s provided our main economic base since 1897, has serious problems." Tourism officials generally blamed the lack of new, large family attract i o n s a n d i n a d e q u a t e promotional support from the slate for the pessimistic outlook. Robert Cruz, president of the Greater M i a m i Hotel nnd Motor Hotel Association, said that "this year (he season was up by 10 per cent because of the Super Bowl and a good Orange Bowl, but that will be wiped out by a 27 per cent increase in our costs (over the past two years)." One indication of declining tourism, officials have s a i d , i s t h a t M i a m i Beach's resort lax revenues in l!)75 fell to the low- estpoinl since 1970. The main problems, according to speakers at the hearing a re: 1. There is IWl.e to attract tourists, especially t h e y o u n g family t h a t travels by car. 2. No state or regional agency coordinates and pursues f o r e i g n and national tourist markets. II. In non-winter months, "you can't gel them (tourists) south of Disney World or Tampa, and if you do they are broke." ·1. The i n c r e a s i n g l y inportiint l^ilin American tourist markel is being discouraged from coming to M i a m i by transportation problems created by a law that prevents qualified lour operators from driv- i n g t h e i r c u s t o m e r s around. Hal Cohen, executive director of I h e M i a m i Beach T o u r i s t Development Authority, believes Gov. itcuhin Askew's cutback of tourism promotion money in the new slate hudgcl hurts. The proposed $5-miUion budget for the tourism division of the Department of Commerce was reduced (o $4 million in Askew's budget recommendation. The main cut was $1.5 million, which was to have been spent on television advertising a r o u n d I h e country. SCECIL SCE AIR . Sen. George Firestone said Dade needs a new attraction the size of Atlan- ta's Six Flags .project in order to bring young families to the area. G r a h a m said t h a t developing a free-trade zone to encourage Latins and other foreign businessmen to come to South Florida to conduct b u s h ness could create thousands of jobs and attract thousands more travelers. · Lafayette THIS WIEK ONLY Prices good thru March 24, W6 LAFAYETTE C.B.
