M. . . - , . . . . .' · -tit" ^^^^^^*^ ' · ' · . · ' " ' S8JS . By ALFRED SHEINWOLD The'new code of'bridge laws, .published in the middle offAprll and scheduled to take effect May 1, will have only a sUght "effect on most players. There^afe no changes in the scoring or In basic rules; as for the rest, the old lyr took was full of .ftiles that most of us .disregarded,, and-,we'li do the same "with the new book. A 1 + 1 0 . 1 V '4 * All Pass . · - . . . : Opening lead -- + K West opened the king of clubs and East began a high- low by playing the nine of clubs. . Right here is where' the trouble started. After playing the nine of clubs East said "Oops" and tried to take his card back. Then, realizing he was too late, East sat, back and tried to look as though nothing had happened. Of course, you see why East started to signal and then changed his mind. His first thought was to overruff dummy on the third round of clubs. Then East saw that South would discard the queen of hearts from dummy on the third club. It was Important for West to switch to hearts at the second trick; then East would return a club and overruff dummy on the next club. West now had an ethical problem. The nine of clubs clearly asked West to continue the suit. East's actions clearly asked West to shift to hearts. "What's the problem?" you ask. "East had no right to say .'Oops* or anything. else. West .must disregard the byplay and must proceed just as though nothing had happened." "Don't be a dope," snarls the Devil that lies just beneath the surface in all of,us. "If it happened against you, they'd switch to hearts and laugh in your . face. Besides, you'd have figured it air out even if nothing had happened. You were going to switch to a heart anwway." No rieed to tell you what most bridge players would do In West's position. Old laws, new laws or no laws at al!, they'd switch to hearts. The better the player, however, the higher his standard of ethics. A really expert player would continue with clubs and take his licking. In a way, hands like this allow a player to classify himself. QUESTION--As dealer, you hold: Spades A K Q J 7 6 3, hearts 9 5 3, diamonds none, clubs 8 5 3..What do you say? Answer--Bid one spade. Don't make a shutout bid when you have a completely solid suit. You may miss an easy slam. For Shelnwold's 36-page booklet, "A Pocket Guide to Bridge," send 50 cents to Bridge Book, Tucson Daily Citizen, Box 3318, Grand Central Station, New York 17, N.Y.
