CLOSED MONDAYS SUNDAY ONLY ,**/'*"'' Dumbbell/ Continued from page 3 alily continue to bedevil the sport, overtones that seem inevitable in a sport so intimately involved with the body. While bodybuilders insist, and with good reason, that no greater percentage of homosexuals lift weights than perform any other function, they admit that crowds of spectators tend to have more than their share. "There are definitely a lot in the audience at contests and they can be pains in the neck," says Mike Mentzer. "They ask you for pictures, they proposition you very directly. I could be living very well right now," he adds with a small smile. "I could be a kept man." But snide remarks about a bodybuilder's masculinity are more of a symptom of the problem than its root cause. That is, as Mentzer knows, "a Puritanical thing," the idea that paying so much attention o one's own body is illegal, mmoral and just plain wrong, tiat showing the body, posing he way builders do in compe- ition is somehow soft and Also, "a lot of people really eel intimidated. They feel fraid. You can just tell that in- their response to you." Women especially are a problem. "You don't start even with women, you're always behind," says Phil Evanisko, another bodybuilder, and Mentzer admits "you scare a lot of women. They feel you're unapproachable, and a lot of guys do try to convey that feeling. When girls get to know you a little, they say they're surprised, they thought I'd just be a huge hulk, that I'd be totally insensitive, without any of the finer qualities." Physical gratifications exist for bodybuilders, things like the- pump, the warm vibrant feeling of blood flowing into a muscle more rapidly than it, can exit, a feeling some bodybuilders say is better than sex. More cerebral, and equally tangible, are the benefits like the sudden quiet that falls over the Spartan Health Club when Mike Mentzer takes off his T-shirt and begins going through his posing repertory, making first one and then' another set of muscles materialize and do its stuff. "There's nothing negative 1 can think of about bodybuilding, except you get a little vain," he says later, adding, after a pause for thought, "A lot vain." Mentzer is not really talking about the Spartan Health Club but places like Gold's Gym in Venice, Calif., the body- IMPERIAL CHINA RESTAURANT SPECIAL PEKING CUISINE EXOTIC CANTONESE FOOD AMERICAN FOOD ALSO SERVED LUNCH COMBINATIONS FROM '1.85 COCKTAILS -- LUNCH DINNER OPEN SUNDAY THRU THURS. 11 -- 10:30; FRI.-SAT. 11 TO J1:3 3204 N. FIRST AVE. AT FT. LOWELL 888-7270 builder's holy of holies, attracting a rabid clientele of devotees who "come from all over the world to watch guys train. A lot of the builders are a bunch of prima donnas, like sex symbols. Ego tends to be more flagrant because thfe body is involved," says Mentzer. "When you see the adulation Arnold Schwarzenegger gets at competitions, it's unbelievable. When he poses, you can feel the vibrations; it's 3,000 people going absolutely crazy. It's more idol-worshipping than any other place. But with people coming from all over the world to look' at your body, how can you avoid it?" Avoiding it is one of the problems Mike Mentzer is trying to deal with as he hurtles toward ultimate success. He does not want to be one of the "guys who lose perspective, whose egos get overblown, who never talk to people with 12-inch arms." But how much of this is it possible to avoid in a sport tljat is "the most satisfying there is. You're on a platform going through your poses and the crowd is going bananas and it's over your bod. It's the greatest ego trip there is. Why deny it?" Another quality of bodybuilding worries Mike Mentzer. "Just last week I was talking to a man who's known all the top physiques of the last 30 years,".he says. "And of all the things he could think about them, he said there was only one common denominator. They were all selfish. And that's a very negative thing." And, if only for a moment, Mike Mentzer becomes a very reluctant Hercules. SPECIAL FOR. GIFTS SPECIAL PEOPIE · JEWELRY · CERAMICS · PAINTINGS CABAT STUDIO 627 N. 4th AYE.
