The Press-Telegram won first place for general excellence ai the 7^ih s n n u . f l convention of the National Editorial Association. Independent, Press-Telegram reporters, Jim McQulcj- (O and \Villi.im Jones ( 2 ) , placed first and lecond respectively in a field of 20(1 cnirics at Beta Srgma Phi's 2 7 t h a n n u a l M.ilrix J o u r n a l i s m Awards dinner in los Angeles. Their awards were for d i s t i n c t i o n in ihe special Jc.itiircs series category. The same week, the circulation department of these nc«sp.ipeti «on two l i t s l place trophies (.5 4) for it; circulation promo-ion program among the nation's metropolitan newspapers with more than inn.OOn circulation. The n a t i o n a l awards in competition with 222 other newspapers were mada at an International Circulation Managers Association convention in New York.- The Independent, Press-Tclcgram won two f i r s t place honors (5 6) among all California daily newspapers in the California N e w s p a p e r A d v e r t i s i n g Executives Association 36th a n n u a l conference in San D.ego. Plaques were .civen for best city-wide promotional edition or section (annual Cook Book) and for best promotion of retail advertising ( t e s t i m o n i a l letters).
